Problem with Sony PlayStation 2 "Fat"

My little brother (12 years old) likes to tinker with things specifically gaming consoles. He was trying to find the Modchip brand and Model for it to buy a new and improved one. He successfully disassembled the console but when he re-assembled it, the DVD Drive was no longer working. The drive would spin the disc for a second and completely stop. Here's a video of what happens:

I've taken my sons ps2 'slim' apart a few times to clean it, and if I remember rightly there are two ribbon cables seated on the underside, they are quite short and if you pull them out from either the mobo or the actual drive it's a pain to get back in, but can be done.

Additionally, I presumed this is now a 'modded' ps2 in which case, it could also be that's been incorrectly modded (ie wrong mod chip, or wire to point solder issue), I'd try de-soldering and see if it plays as normal.

I used to have this same issue with modded psx, where they wouldn't spin up due to the mod chip.

Regards

Dodel.

Also for your information. A mod chip is not required to play your backups. You can install Free MCBoot and ESR on your memory card that will allow you to play them with no chip whatsoever.

Oh thanks for that, I was looking into getting a network adapter for my sons (now he's upgraded to a 360), but wasn't really prepared the asking price for something like a network card, I'll look into the above.

Ty again.

With the old fat PS2s and the network adapter... you can stick a hard drive in there and put all of his games on the hard drive and never worry about discs again... unless you are installing another game. Check out HDLoader and OpenPS2Loader.

try to disassemble again and screw it up :)

Well I did and there were no changes. I think it may be the screws but the thing is, I don't know the lay-out of the screws for this version. All of them were the first ones.

What the poster means is, disassemble, make sure all ribon cables are back in place and then put the thing back together. You don't to put the screws back in until you know it's spinning up correctly, and playing games.

Ps. have you even read my inital comment ?

Actually yes I have. All the ribbons are nice and smooth.

Ah, thank you for reminding me. The modchip wirings were ok. Upon further analysis, the thing seems to stop after 2 cycles (the up and down thing).

Ok, have you tried running with the mod chip removed ?, I'm asking as you would need to eliminate all foreign bodies (ie the mod chip), before looking at other reasons why it's not spinning up correctly.

Obviously if it then spins up without the modchip....

Sadly I am not good at soldering or removing them. I'm afraid that if I attempt to remove the modchip, I may never be able to put it back or I might punch a whole through the motherboard. This is a secret operation between the both of us so big daddy can't know.
