Installing Windows 7 on a UEFI-Based Computer

How does one go about installing Windows 7 on a UEFI-Based computer system? My laptop here has UEFI on it and Im really confused on which boot option to use for the DVD drive on boot... it shows UEFI and the usual normal one... not sure which one to use here...

Also this is on a ASUS N56VZ laptop I may be doing this on... just trying to prepare myself just incase of the event I can't get my games working properly on Windows 8.

I guess what I am trying to ask is how one would go about installing Windows 7 on a UEFI based system and exactly how to do it properly the first time around!

Make sure your system firmware is current. It should have a setting that controls whether your install will be UEFI or not (in many cases it's called "CSM," where if that's enabled you'll essentially be doing a traditional install). If you want to do a UEFI install, and if CSM (or equivalent setting exists), disable it and then choose the UEFI DVD boot option. Anyway, this guide is very detailed:

Ohh yeah the CSM deal you speak of IS on my BIOS (its called "Launch CSM" I believe)... that is one thing I did see.... so I guess what I am asking is the best boot option from the DVD would be to just use the UEFI boot option from DVD drive, correct?

One more question... do I keep "Secure Boot Control" disabled or enabled? This is also a setting in my BIOS too.

I guess my general basic question is do I have to use the "UEFI: DVDROM" option at boot menu for booting from device to install Windows 7 or just use the normal one?

My current system has GPTs on both partitions on my HD named OS and DATA on same HD (ASUS does this on all their machines now btw)

Also it looks like ASUS doesn't support "Downgrade Rights" on their systems... but its not like I need that ;)

I need to know if I need to boot from UEFI mode on DVDROM or just the normal mode for installing Win7 onto my ASUS N56VZ laptop is basically the question at hand

I get the UEFI and Normal boot DVD drive options and that's confusing me!

@ DCS: I disabled UEFI in the BIOS... but yet I am still given the UEFI DVD Boot option even after disabling UEFI... very confusing to me!

No, it's not confusing at all.

Means only disabling UEFI won't do I think. Probably the HDD will need to be re-formatted too. :dunno:

DKT: My tower has Windows installed via UEFI DVD Boot... which means its main HD is GPT as well... it wouldn't begin to even allow me to install it via legacy installation way when I had to replace the HDD, LOL!

Btw the tower I have is a HP H8-1040 if you needed to figure out how old that is.... I bought it in Summer of 2011 (nearly 2yrs old now)..... but it could only be booted from UEFI DVD option and proceed with Windows installation on the boot menu when you press the magic key to bring that up.

I'm really totally confused on how to go about installing Windows 7 to my laptop due to all that UEFI stuff.... UEFI is too confusing (and we all thought that BIOS was hard enough to deal with!)

Anyhow DKT... what is your recommended plan of action to deploy Windows 7 to my UEFI-based laptop?

Do you wanna follow what I say - or persist with the 3rd hand advice proffered by your 2nd hand friends?

So DCS, you are saying I basically have to repartition the whole entire hard drive and wipe everything?

I think I could probably save a bunch of hassle if the UEFI DVD boot option from my boot menu works well (it does on my tower, needless to say).... mainly since I want to keep the "ASUS Windows 8 Factory Restore" image on the hard drive for future use and they say if you delete it, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to get it back if you accidentally delete it, YIKES!!!

The above reason is probably a good enough reason on why I would want to do such a thing.

No, I'm not saying that - I'm asking for a simple one word answer to my question in my previous post.

You need to disable secure boot aswell as switch to CSM.

Yes I pretty much got this from Google results.... I am just confused on to use UEFI boot with DVDROM drive or not since I am given the two options at the boot menu

OK I just checked my Boot Menu boot options... now it doesn't show the UEFI DVD Boot option...

If you want a pic of what it (meaning the boot menu) looks like, please tell me and I will get one posted!

Update: Looks like my DVD drive is pretty picky on how clean DVDs must be to read them..... I had trouble reading the Win7 DVD for awhile.... damn picky drives!
