BSOD Right After ASUS BIOS Flash Update

Hey, not sure if this is normal but I got a BSOD right after I updated my ASUS N56VZ's BIOS today.... would this happen to be something normal after using ASUS WinFlash Util to flash your BIOS?

This happened under Windows 8 WinFlash Util latest version offered by ASUS btw.

The MiniDump file is available @ http://www.sendspace.com/file/cfoceq if you need to view it. I would've used the built-in here but it exceeded the file size for the site requirements.

which version did you update?

022113-15234-01.dmp NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM Ntfs.sys

From version 211 to version 216 (216 is the very latest one for my machine)

If you updated your BIOS, you should probably update your chipset driver as well (e.g., Intel Chipset Installer, etc.,).

Did all driver updates (but LAN Ethernet port since I don't use this port hardly ever) for everything that needed it.

Go to ASUS forums and state your problem there. You may have better opinion about your problem. But don't expect other forums to be as active and responsive as nsane forums :P . I have posted a query in AMD game forums. It's been a month now but no response.

YAH this place is way more active... maybe someone will exactly know whats up with this issue here quicker ;)

Its not like it bugs me but it makes me wonder how in the world it happened after a BIOS flash...

1. Avoid updating the BIOS from Windows, better use DOS / BIOS based programs.

2. It might be an LAN driver problem after all. Your dump file gives from hints of it.

Windows 8 is not all that stable in my opinion. Well, atleast not 100%. Take my example, it randomly gave me BSOD at boot for first couple of weeks - had no driver problems, and something like it never happened in Windows 7. Even a dump file wasn't created, just that new BSOD page.

Weird DKT... it made a dump file for me after the BSOD happened... that's usually how it works!

Anyhow I don't know how to use the Asus EzFlash that's inside the BIOS.

BTW, do you suggest I update the Ethernet port driver even if I don't use it?

For example . . . . . . . . . . .

Drivers (regardless of whether one uses them or not) needs to be kept updated - they startup with Windows on elevated privileges (regardless of whether one uses them or not.)

Agreed.

It's very easy.

Take a usb pen drive. Paste the new BIOS ROM file into it. Start BIOS, open that EZFLash thingy. Backup the current BIOS to USB. Flash the new one.

Just follow the on-screen instructions, very easy to use. ;) Read motherboard manual if you want proper directions.

OK Updated all drivers for devices (that were necessary)... no issues have arisen just yet... give it some time I guess!

Will report back if all is A-OK!

  • 2 weeks later...

@DKT: OK... well everything has been OK for a week or so now.... just to keep you posted...

BTW I was looking at the EzFlash program in the BIOS... tinkered around with that for awhile the other day and it CAN read from the internal HD for flashing the BIOS so I think the USB thing you suggest for flashing BIOS from is not truly necessary from what I see.... unless you think otherwise.

Just thought u would like to know that little fact about the EzFlash program on ASUS machines!

You mean it can also flash from external HDDs? That's a good news to me. :)

The problem with USB is, it needs to be in a format (I forgot whether it was NTFS or FAT32) for it backup (write) the current BIOS to USB. So external HDDs is helpful indeed.

I have Asus too and I downloaded the latest bios file and then I rebooted my computer, then I used Asus's bios flash utility which is located in bios, all worked correctly.

I guess when they issue a new BIOS for my computer I will just use the BIOS EzFlash program.... seems that their Windows based flasher gives BSOD after its done....

No no no... I was able to read my internal hard drive right from the EzFlash util in the BIOS dude... I didn't even have any external hard drives hooked up at all!
