AVs that don't affect System Performance

I need some recommendations for my newly bought netbook (it was cheap) that I'll use for browsing the web, make Word Documents, read E-mails, blah blah blah, you know what it is. I bought the netbook simply for School stuff and I'll keep all my gaming on my desktop.

I don't a light to the core AV (like ESET) but I prefer one that has a wider array of protection and something different. Avast just doesn't cut it when it comes to resources since it slows everything down. I want an AV that doesn't affect my Internet speed. :D

If you manage to find an AntiVirus system (or any other security system) that does not affect system performance - you've been scammed.

Having said that, I would dwell on minimizing the degree of impact - there are 2 basic ways to do it:-

  • Get rid of most of your real-time modules - be sure in your mind at which layer you would want to halt malware. Is the halt gonna be at web level, port level, disk level or execution level - implement the layer pertinent to that particular level and simply disable the other layers (there's no hand-holding between modules.)
  • Ensure you maintain an exhaustive list of exclusions (this should be an ongoing process - a way of life.) Your security systems are stupid - they are coded for AI (Artificial Intelligence - in other words, they are Retards) that keeps them more busier at scanning each other than protecting your interests.

Edit:

Some of those Retarded AntiVirii have been reported to have elevated themselves to the position of Masters of a species known commonly as Slaves (oops - I beg your pardon Homo Sapiens, not Slaves.)

..I have a netbook with ESS installed. Doesn't affect me much, just be sure to turn off any protection module you don't need as dcs18 stated. :)

Every AV or firewall will slow down the system if you have a laptop, netbook or desktop with a minimum of hardware

I made me a VM that uses the exact specs as my netbook and so far only AVG has caused the least performance impact. Although as far as I have heard, AVG has bad protection and detection. You guys' thoughts?

I think that Webroot have the smallest impact to system, but have BIG numbers of false positive, and for real detection I am not sure.

If you are satisfied with AVG you can use him without worries for school things. :)

I don't see anything about OS that you'll use on the OP. If you're planning to use linux, it safe enough without AV. :)

I'm using Windows 7.

Well right now, my thoughts lie on Web and File Protection because I will put extremely important files in the netbook that I can't loose. Though I have MEGA and Dropbox, its such a pain in the ass to download them individually so I can't afford to re-download them.

So? Only way to loose files is when hard disk dies. No one malware deletes files, except some of them infect PE files.

Even if your system fails down, it's it possible to copy the files. Make another partition and store files there.

I am using Bitdefender Free on my Win7 x64 and it's working very good, doesn't have a lot of options which can be good or bad, but I ain't complain...

Very low on resoruces and with good support from other antimalware tools and your behaviour you don't have to worry...

MSE + Malwarebytes Antimalware + Comodo Firewall (optional).

or

Eset AV + Malwarebytes Antimalware + Comodo Firewall (optional).

Hmm... considering Webroot. As far as I have seen in tests, MSE performed bad. AVG was "clean" according to a test and a quick scan with MBAM and I haven't seen any recent tests about Webroot but Notebook users seem to recommend it a lot.

This is the lightest AV I've ever used, and (based on my experience) it's a pretty good one as well

File size is good, resource usage is also good.

The fact it looks like adware and has few settings is what is distancing me from this product.

I've used for quite some time on several PCs and I liked it. I suggest you try it for yourself then judge.

You also might wanna check the reviews here, both the editor's and the users'.
