Administrator DKT27 Posted February 13, 2013 Administrator Share Posted February 13, 2013 Opera dies... Shame... I will still be using it tho. Always hated this stupid numerology of Firefox shit... And maybe later on I'll try Chrome.lol.The so called "stupid numerology" was started by Chrome. And you are using that excuse to try Chrome?I am afraid to see a new "IE6" era with Webkit dominance. R.I.P Opera My point exactly. Webkit is everywhere. Mobile, Desktop, everywhere. How long before it's dominance gets the better of it?Are people misreading what actually happened today with all these "RIP Opera" posts? Presto hasn't been competitive for a while. So they're going to swap it out for Webkit. OK, so beyond increased speed and decreased site compatibility issues, what's really going to change from the perspective of actually running Opera on the desktop? The same features are going to be there. If you use it today, you have no lesser reason to use it then. Unless they put a new skin on it (which they do every couple years), will anyone even be able to tell at a glance that it's any different? So what's all the mourning about?Same features? Same looks? I doubt that. As mentioned above, it might well be just another Chrome clone with Opera stamp on it. ;)
alaindc
opera was fast and stable, and was often the first to implement new features....BUTfirefox came, with all his addon i love, so i rarely use opera in the last 2 years.still...one good browser is gone, less competition, sadly.big brother have won... Avitar
Wow.. with the death of opera, so dies the dream of an officially supported and innovated pure x64 based browser... I use opera mini on my phone, to me it's the fastest .jar MOBILE browser.

fortheloveof***
I might be able to use xmarks now with opera.I don't think it was even close to being a web devs top 3 browsers. one less compatibility problem to deal with so websites are easier to make better. Now they if they do contribute a new awesome feature they are doing it the chromium code that many people can build off and work with. This is not another Microsoft IE thing since the code is open sourced and the dev is different. I think it is a good direction for standards. I like chrome but certian Firefox addons i find critical for daily use but i want to jump from browser to browser across platforms with as little complication as possible in a perfect world. The fragmented dev was not healthy in the current climate since things are moving too fast.Google has a pretty simple concept with Chrome. Push the web forward since a happy user experience on the web = more peoples seeing their adverts. It is pretty much that simple. Opera lost the point. rseiler
@DKT27, based on what's actually been announced though, I don't see why changing from Presto to Webkit means anything more than just that. The UI and everything that goes along with it should be unaffected.

There are many browsers using webkit today and maybe in future firefox also will shift to webkit.

It is most likely going to look very similar to Chrome. Don't know lets see.Webkit was originally developed by KDE related guys. Apple later felt it was good so it start working on it, later Google joined, then others.Firefox will never ever do that. Firefox is here for competition, for open web, it will never chicken-out like Opera.

rseiler
Maxthon as an example, as I recall.Did they say March somewhere? I imagine that there's going to be a looooong series of posts made to the beta blog before we ever see a Desktop final version released. Maybe those versions would start in March.I did see that they're going to show the Android version at a trade show later this month.

I like Opera not only because of the many smart features Opera is often years ahead of introducing but also because of presto, especially the way it renders partially loaded pages, when loading, it really is much smoother on Opera than any other browser engine.
