I don't think its available as a portable version... it doesn't take up much space to install it anyways... so why not just install the actual thing?

I don't understand, since its a disk defragmenter software!

That's a pretty lame excuse since I doubt the programs would work any better or not work at all w/o them being properly installed.

PerfectDisk is awesome but your wasting your time.. PD needs to install and run services. you need to install it !

not sure why you want to avoid the registry..

lol portable

99% of the time it means someone installed the program and then copied it or uploaded it etc

it's doesn't usually mean it will work any different and if they do see teh developers web site for more info.

i see people posted so called portable versions of everything conceivable on places like TPB and it's dumb !

I've had to warn people about some of them over there such as UltraIso..

Be VERY careful using stuff some random person is passing around labelled as "portable"

many programs will not work properly if people try and force a program to be portable.

and that means running a software program off of a USB drive etc

My advice would be to avoid all that crap..

although i almost always download versions of program with no installer but that doesn't make it portable.

I hope this trend on file sharing sites goes away it's doing more harm than good.

i'd rather have software from the source than some hacked up mashed pile of god knows what from some random guy.

I think Raxco PerfectDisk dominates the other defrag app's for features, stability, safety, performance and the GUI.

How many of those other apps have a system like optiwrite for example ?

PD can let you do some preset profiles or custom styles of defragging too.

anyway that's my vote lol

IMHO using a portable "defragger" is very dangerous because the virtualized program doesn't see "the real disk" but a merged one with "fake" registry keys and program locations.

Those fake registry keys and program locations come from the system where the portable was built.

Those fake registry keys and program locations come from the system where the portable was built.

There is a difference between "virtualized portable" and "wrapper portable". All a "wrapper portable" do is to create a wrapper EXE that:

1. writes the settings needed for the app to the registry.

2. launch the original app EXE

3. wait for the app to close.

4. when app is detected as closed, save and remove the settings from the registry again.

Things like portableapps.com are wrappers in which the application runs natively with full access to the hardware.

But things like VMware ThinApp are virtualized portable - so stay away them for system utilities since they cannot access the underlying hardware.
