Microsofts super-select, invitation-only Surface Pro launch event in New York has been cancelled thanks to a big fish.

The general manager of Microsofts Surface team Panos Pany tweeted that he wouldnt be able to attend the event at Best Buy in Times Square because of blizzard warnings hanging over the New York City area.

Microsoft subsequently told press the event had been cancelled due to the weather.

The city, state and North East of the US are under a severe weather warning ahead of the arrival of a winter storm named Nemo by the Weather Channel.

The storms expected to dump up to four inches of snow an hour and bring 60mph winds, leading to the cancellation of at least 3,800 flights to NYC. Public transport has been shut down in the city of Boston and non-essential state employees have been sent home by the governor of Rhode Island.

Microsoft had been due to host a reception on the evening of February 8 for invited guests with a formal launch at Best Buy at midnight on 9 February. Panay was to be on site to meet and greet, but press were not invited.

Its the second delay to the arrival of the Intel-powered, chunkster slablet that's been getting the kind of reviews that help ensure press don't get invited to launch events. Microsoft had previously promised Surface Pro 90 days after the launch of Windows 8 and Surface RT in October, putting arrival in January. ®
