[Mid-range smartphone] Samsung Galaxy S Advance?

RadioActive

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get a new mid-range phone because my current one is getting too old (hTc Desire) and it's starting to be a bit problematic.

Anyways, as I said, I'm not looking for anything expensive which rules out most of the newer models. I'd tell you my budget but it won't matter since I don't live in the US, so the prices vary quite a bit.

After looking around I discovered the Galaxy S Advance which is perfect for my budget and it seems pretty good. I also checked the Galaxy SIII Mini but it's more expensive than the Advance (about an equivalent of $30~40 more) and the only notable bonus in the Mini it offer more memory (1GB vs 768MB) but also suffers for non-scratch resistant screen and a poor front-facing camera.

And before you ask, the Galaxy SII is over my budget, so I'm not even considering it.

I'm curious of anyone used the Advance, would like to hear your opinions.

Also, if you'd like to suggest alternatives (Android phones only of course) then the criteria are:

1) Price must be equal to (or preferably less than) the price of the Mini.

2) The display shouldn't be less than 4.0".

Thanks in advance (no pun intended).

That phone is outcome of Lamesung's politics not to release newer systems for mid range phones. Galaxy S/S+ didn't get android 4.0 so Lamesung released this phone...

My advice for you is to buy S/S+ because they have better community support. I have 4.2.1 on my S+

If you don't prefer Custom ROM's then Advance is good for you...

Both the S and S+ are no longer being sold here and I would prefer not to get a used phone. Also the Advance offers a better CPU among other things.

Thanks nonetheless.

What about Lava's xolo?

BTW, i have samsung s advance(gt-i9070) and it is still on 2.3.6. No further updates are released.

for xolo it has intex dual core processor and 1 gb ram (s advance about 576mb) and less costly than S Advance. drawbacks are: mini sim and no memory slot (inbuilt 16gb, BTW in samsung i never used more than 12gb) and logo of lava (not me but many will consider it a drawback).

and also their are many other new brands offering much better specs and features. give them a try and provide samsung some competition as i think they are losing their grips on customer support.

I never heard of "Lava Xolo" so it doesn't exist here.

As for the Advance, According to GSMArena it's supposed to be upgradable to 4.1, but these updates don't hit all areas at the same time.

Also, I know there are not-so-popular brands (such as Huawei) offering good and cheap phones but I'm not interested in those because they always end-up having almost no community whatsoever which is quite important for me since I always root and heavily modify my phones.

Comparison: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5033&idPhone2=4469

My vote from these two goes to: Samsung I8190 Galaxy S III mini

Reasons:

  • 1 GB Ram
  • Wifi Direct - Awesome feature soon to replace the bluetooth
  • Bluetooth 4.0 - Wiki
  • NFC Support - Don't know if you'll use that

Also I may suggest to you LG Nexus 4 E960 (LG Fan  )

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_nexus_4_e960-5048.php

  • Supports a lot more apps from Google Play than most other phones (Because its Nexus)
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 2
  • 768 x 1280 pixels, 4.7 inches - Sharper Screen
  • 2 GB Ram :showoff:
  • 8 MP Camera
  • Quad-core CPU
  • And a whole bunch of mega killer features B)

For the Mini, THE only upside I see is the RAM, the others are worthless to me. Also, the Mini has a crappy front facing camera. All in all, I don't believe it's worth it.

As for the Nexus 4 is most definitely out of the question. Here it costs MORE than the Galaxy SIII and the Galaxy Note 2 which is absurd.

I looked better at specifications and Advance is worth buying...

You can easily flash 4.1.2

Thanks, I'm still looking for alternatives but so far I think the Advance offers the best bang-for-the-buck (for a mid-range that is).

Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus S7500 - Doesn't meet the criteria (less than 4.0")

Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070 - I'm already discussing that one, duh!

Samsung Galaxy S I9000 - Doesn't meet the criteria (no longer available)

Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 - Doesn't meet the criteria (no longer available)

Sony Xperia go - Doesn't meet the criteria (less than 4.0")

That wasn't helpful at all. You might wanna re-read the OP, if you want to help that is...

The Xperia J sucks (even less ram, less memory, single core, cruddy camera...etc) and the Xperia P is way over my budget.

In any case, I'm not likely to look for Sony products because the good models are overpriced here, and the affordable ones aren't that good.

How about one of these phones:

  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC Velocity 4G
  • HTC Evo 4G+
  • Sony Xperia P

The first three are not even available here and the fourth one (as I already stated earlier) is way over my budget...

The SIII Mini has already been mentioned, and it's more expensive than the Advance with only 1 real bonus which is more RAM and a few disadvantages.

The Xperia P has also been already mentioned twice and as I said (twice) it's way over my budget.

Also, I'm not looking for anything less than 4.0". On the contrary, I'm looking for phones with at least 4.0" display, in other words; 4.0" or larger.

Try the LG Optimus L9, well under 300$ & should fit your criteria !

It seems like a decent phone, but I'm afraid it's not available here. At least not that I know of.

Sadly, for some reason here almost all Sony and HTC products are overpriced :-(
