Give a try by creating a bootable USB flash drive of win xp.

pure xp installation or modified installer?

Download WinsetupFromUSB

Insert your XP CD to the drive

Run WinSetupFromUSB choosing the correct one for the type of winXP that you have (x86 / x64)

Do the rest as shown exactly in the image below:

Capture.png

Now in the BIOS, make sure that the following options are enabled:

Boot other Devices - Yes

Change the boot sequence to keep USB flash drive option on the top

Save and exit the BIOS

Now plug the created USB drive in and proceed.

i'm trying this technique, takes so long in copying files, ok.... just usb 2.0 -__-

I know, it takes time.

That must be USB 2.0 because I don't think WinXP has forward compatibility for 3.0

@ didialdi

My two-fold suggestions to you:-

  • Crack the Supervisor password in your BIOS, first (using the hardware reset method) - it will come back to haunt you (sooner than later.)
  • Stick with Window 7 - tweak her, and she can be run swifter than XP with additional RAM (one should move forward with the times.)

Sorry, didn't mean to gate-crash your chatroom. It simply means that someone has knowingly or unwittingly password-protected your BIOS.

Generally, there are 2 levels of possible password protection - Supervisor and HardDisk.

I had resetted the BIOS of a desktop PC once and that solved some problem that I had by that time. For a notebook, I don't know how safe it is.

And I support the second opinion. Disable aero and transparency in windows 7. It should work fine. Win 7 is way faster and advanced than XP.

@didialdi, How much RAM do the notebook has?

Hey didialdi, You should try a series of tweaks that I'll provide below for win 7. See how your system responses after that.

First of all, Download Windows 7 manager from frontpage and instal it.

Now, if you are using offline antivirus, switch to cloud antivirus (I personally prefer WebrootSecureAnywhere - available in the fp, and have been using it since 3 months). From my personal experience I can tell you that offline antivirus has considerable negative impact on system performance.

If you wish to try this, let me know. I'll get you a pdf file from where you can disable unnecessary running services on windows 7 (believe me, they are aLOLtz)

I agree with this statement 100%.... XP is too old for most new things nowadays anyways!

Why would I make fun of somebody who just experimented with his fathers system against the advice of his fellow members?

Hmm, that's right too. He hadn't told me how much RAM that the laptop has. With 1GB of RAM, he can run a 32-bit version of w7 quite well (of course, we will do some tweak for him to make his experience more fluid.
