Avitar
Kim Dotcom's new filesharing website Mega forced offlineKim Dotcom’s new filesharing service, Mega, has already hit problems after the government of Gabon suspended its web address on fears it would be used for large scale copyright infringement.Kim Dotcom enjoyed a flamboyant lifestyle before his arrest Mr Dotcom is facing extradition from New Zealand to the United States on charges relating to his previous venture, Megaupload, which was shut down by authorities in January over alleged piracy of films and music. Currently on bail, he has been developing Mega as a replacement for introduction in January, and claiming its design means it will be beyond the reach of legal action. But already, the new service, due to be hosted at www.me.ga, using the top-level domain for Gabon, has hit official opposition. "I have instructed my departments... to immediately suspend the site www.me.ga," announced Gabonese Communication Minister Blaise Louembe, saying he wanted to "protect intellectual property rights" and "fight cyber crime effectively... Gabon cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights, nor be used by unscrupulous people," the minister said.Mr Dotcom is next due in court in March. The case against him has been delayed by procedural irregularities, including an admission by John Key, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, that his communications were unlawfully wiretapped. Mr Louembe said the domain name had been allocated to someone in France who had then transferred it to Dotcom. The minister said an investigation by his staff had found the site was set up to redirect traffic to another site hosted in France that would provide access to shared files.Mr Dotcom said on Twitter that he was the victim of a US-led "witch hunt" but was not concerned at Gabon's move. "Don't worry. We have an alternative domain," he tweeted to his 150,000 followers. "This just demonstrates the bad faith witch hunt the US government is on. Dotcom did not reveal the alternative domain name. :view: Original Article
