[Solved] Error in creating Bootable USB for win xp sp3 BE

I apologize for bumping this old thread, but I am having the exact same issue as the OP, and would like to follow the steps he outlined to correct the problem.

However, the links provided by rahuldohare & dcs18 to the file required for the fix (TXTSETUP.SIF) are dead.

Does anyone have a good link to this file?

No problem with that at all. You can bump anywhere you want :)

Did you try WinSetupFromUSB?

I have not yet attempted the fix using that program, as the TXTSETUP.SIF file was part of the fix.

I'll go ahead with the steps you originally provided, but without the TXTSETUP.SIF file.

We'll see how it goes, I'll post my results.

Just perform the operation with WinSetupFromUSB and consider formatting with NTFS.

  • 10 months later...

I'm having the exact same problem, although different circumstances.

I have a mini-notebook running Ubuntu 14.04, and I was trying to install WinXP alongside Ubuntu (not too much RAM for a VM).

So tried different programs to create a bootable USB drive, and yet none was successfull!

  • Tried rufus (on my Windows 7 64bit Desktop) latest version and version 1.2 (As someone somewhere noted that it'll be the last version table to support XP). In both cases it was copied successfully but when booted into USB I always get missing BOOTMGR
  • Tried UNetBootin on my Ubuntu (Same thing)
  • Tried WinUSB on Ubuntu (Same thing)
  • Tried a terminal based method mentioned here on my Ubuntu machine and still the same problem. The notebook boots from USB but then shows an error "BOOTMGR is missing"
  • But then when I used WinSetupFromUSB on my windows machine it gave the same error as OP, "TXTSETUP.SIF could not be found"

So downloaded another version of XP SP3 iso (ThumperDC) and tried to use WinSetupfromUSB again, and it gave me the same error!

I checked the link provided by some helping users but none is working anymore

Can somebody please re-upload the links?

Let me understand it better, you are trying to install Windows after you installed Linux? You're going to kill Grub.

No biggy, I can fix grub issue with a live Ubuntu USB. I wish I can get to that stage first and it won't be a problem :P

Though now I'm downloading the original XP SP2 iso, probably will solve the problem with WinSetupFromUSB

[sOLVED]

Wohoo finally, downloaded the original untouched WIndows XP SP3 ISO, and used WinSetupFromUSB V1.4, burned it into a USB flash on my Windows 7 machine. and plugged it into the ubuntu machine. Everything went like charm!

So time for some RED ALERT 2! How about some action!
