I have been defragmenting my harddrive for years and I just want to know if it is a waste of my time.

Does defragmenting you hard drive have any noticeable speed improvements or benifits?

Does arranging , tiding up your room from the mess and ruckus it was in , help you out in any way ?

When are you able to find things easy , faster and quicker ?

When all is well set , tidy , in place and well arranged or when everything is out of its designated place, thrown around in some nook and corner everything jumbled and hotch potch ?

Get the answer ! ;)

+1.

It also depends on what methods you use. Common fast defrag or Windows defrag consolidation will only improve the speed a little* (*on a weekly defragged drive), but if you use softwares that systematically arrange the files, the boost is massive.

trust me... fragmented hard drive is slower than defragmented hard drive and i recommend to use third party defragmentation tools like diskeeper for more noticeable speed improvements ! ! ! ;)

DKT27, I use MyDefrag...I really dont know what type it is. Can you suggest me a good one?

I just checked it on the website. You can try it's "Optimization" method rather than Consolidation.

Great defragmentation softwares include PerfectDisk, Diskeeper, O&O Defrag and UltimateDefrag (all frontpaged). ;)

I use IObit Smart Defrag:

http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html

It has an Automatic Defrag setting, that runs when the PC is idle, the default is set to run after 5 minutes of idleness. You can also manually defragment as well.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Smart Defrag is freeware!

Oh yeah, it certainly works!!!

Have observed that the Server solutions do the job a whole lot quicker than the Standard or Pro editions.

Yes sir it certenly does.

I use perfectdisk 12.5

Just install

Activate bootdefrag ( then restart )

Defrag the smartdefrag option.......

And you never have to worry about anything no more

defragmentation poll

this topic have many useful info, and opinion, about defragmentation.

i don't have a defragmenting software, on my current pc (naturally faster than my old vintage one who die a few month's ago)

but i'm thinking about adding one.

defrag software speed up pc, but does using one with automatic defrag when the drive is idle could worn the hardrive faster?

Does a minimal speed gain is worth it, for a pc used for multimedia purpose (no gaming) ?

MyDefrag is very good. I used it for months, then switched to Diskeeper 2011 for the automatic defrag. It showed that my drives were perfectly defragmented by MyDefrag.

I used the system defrag monthly on C and Data monthly on D and it worked great.

If you're happy doing manual jobs like I did stick with it. If you want fit and forget try Diskeeper.

That's the fear I have with Diskeeper, which it fully automatic. The last major version that I had tried, used to slow down my system time and again, and used to defrag files when I was using the computer. Which ultimately will mean increased wear and tear of the drive. That is why I use PerfectDisk, auto defrag once a week or every day on schedule times and you are done. No worries, full arrangements. :)

Using a disk optimizer (something that all the big times defrags do) will bring out huge speed increase. Doesn't matter if you are gaming, even browsing requires proper disk speed.

Thank's for your answer DKT27. I always find your opinions very useful and well thought.

I also dislike diskeeper, when i try it (old pc) at the time of the last defrag software poll (may 2012).

i will try Perfectdisk, and probably setup the auto defrag maybe each day on the windows partition, and each week for the other drive.

in the poll, some have concern about "OptiWrite" causing error.

do you have it enable?

do any have problem with it?

And you surely turn off "auto optimisation", to not wear the drive?

Thanks. :) By default, PerfectDisk only has SMART method set as default on the main drive, but I use it on all drives (specifically cause I use all of them a lot).

I tried to find your post, but couldn't. :P Can you please say the post number? :)

I can assure you that I have seen the difference in my computer and some customer's computers! If you defrag regularly--as it seems you do--then you won't notice a difference. Why not go a few months without defragging your system and see the difference.

post 16

one user say it, but didn't explain when another user ask about it.

and i just try to google "Perfectdisk OptiWrite cause error" , without result.

so, probably a false alert.

did you use the pro version with a regkey, or the business one with the keygen?

I see. No such problems noticed here. Usually such problems are due to security softwares or some system problem.

Business with keygen. It is actually the same thing as Home Pro, just activation and name is different.
