Comodo Firewall: Good or Bad

comodo fw is much praised but don't know why??

i am using comodo IS from 2 years never got any problem. it examine programs and ask me if find something suspicious. that is good.

i never messed with firewall's option until today. but today i want to block facebook with it and surprisingly, it failed completely. actually it blocked my network completely twice. but never worked with facebook or any other site.

i think its a big issue for any firewall. (especially if that one is considered among best ones)

one of my friend told me that it had caused issue with network connectivity for him, and he had to reinstall it more than once.

i don't know much about security apps.

so want to know, is it a big issue??

Firstly, If you've never configured COMODO's option, the cause of your plight is understandable (you need to get into it's pants.) :think:

Secondly what were the steps you attempted to take to block FaceBook (and other sites that you failed to block?)

Thirdly, it's not a big issue for any firewall - but, for the User (FWIW, no issue here in blocking FaceBook or any other site.)

Finally, judging by your use - you do not need a firewall (some others might certainly require it.) Better for you to use the hosts. :)

Actually it is. This is the reason why I moved 2 years ago from ZoneAlarm Pro to Comodo Firewall. As of v10 ZoneAlarm annoyingly resets any user defined policy based on a m$ recommendation file which is included in its update; you can avoid the update, but not the reset; e.g. if you block application X, this gets automatically unblocked after a number of days;

Comodo has a lot of great features (see their website), but I chose it basically for 2 reasons:

- light memory footprint;

- versatile policy customization.

With regard to the policy management, the group feature is imho incredible usefull. You set it up like this: you define a group name in computer security policy, which is part of the defense section; you put any number of files, programs, folders in that group; then you define a policy for that group in network security policy, which is part of the firewall section; and that policy could be e.g. blocking any outgoing network traffic.

Result: none of your custom defined group will be able to call out. No change in host file needed.

I was referring to the 'any firewall' you mentioned and I gave ZoneAlarm as example where you do have an issue to keep it stonewalled.

Have not used ZoneAlarm in recent times - however, I grew up on the Pro variant and never had any blocking issue where the rules get reset and don't see any mention of the same at their forums either. :dunno:

This problem appeared as of version 10. If you didn't find it in the standard forums, then you didn't look for it.

4. if you tick exclude, then your all network(internet) hang i.e no incoming outgoing data.

its really a big issue that a software has an option which is not working. of course a fool can waste money and time on this kind.

I spend some time to find for you the root cause of the zonealarm issue. It is the "Microsoft Catalogue Utilization". This nifty feature uses the M$ catalogue to define for you what should be denied or allowed. It fully ignores what you have defined yourself.

I noticed that ZoneAlarm made a grant effort in blanking out all pages that refer to that problem from their fora. Guess they didn't solve it :)

Are you facing the same problems like Princenarwal in blocking FaceBook with COMODO (just curious, why I'm able to block the same - never actually gave it any serious thought, expecting it to happen rather than not.) :think:

Blocking facebook was like blocking any other application. It worked as advertised. No problem at all.

I personally prefer Outpost, tried comodo at least once year and same issues always present themselves.. buggy.. blocks stuff it hasnt been told to, without giving an option or alert and doesnt show that it's blocked anything in its own logs, or it doesnt block something it should.

I found ZoneAlarm very intuitive and user friendly - but, ineffective on occasions (good firewall for Learners.) :think:

COMODO which is a bit difficult (especially for n00bs) - nevertheless, the most potent (never had the issues described, here.) :)
