I installed Windows 8 and....

So, I recently installed Windows 8 on the ff. System Specs:

Intel 865G Chipset (XPDM)

Asus P5PE-VM Motherboard

1.5 GB of RAM

Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHz

Samsung SA16100N (1366x768 tops)

80 GB Seagate Hard Disk

REVIEW:

PRO

The OS itself is not bad. All is running smoothly hell EVEN SMOOTHER than it did on Windows 7. All the stuff like boot-up decreased drastically. The UI doesn't take much to learn and DOES NOT suck as bad as the users say. The Start Menu is easy to access and all works properly. All my old apps seemed to work with no problems.Overall, Windows 8 is pretty stable.

CONS

Ok, after I installed this OS I noticed that all my drivers worked perfect EXCEPT for 1: MY VGA DRIVER!!! At first I thought what could possibly go wrong eh? It was on default 1024x768 but when I was gonna move to my supposed 1280x768 or at least 1366x768, I noticed that I didn't have either option. I went haywire and almost through my monitor off my apartment window but 1280x1080 can be manageable.

QUESTIONS OLD PC USERS WILL ASK:

Does this make my PC faster?

A: Definitely

Should I upgrade?

A: Its your call.

Is it secure?

A: Yeah.

How can I use my XPDM Driver?

A: As far as I know, you can't.

I can't get some apps to work on 1024 x 768.

A: Get a new monitor that can go at least 1280 x 768

MY QUESTION

How can I get 1280 x 768 off the "Microsoft Basic Visual Adapter"?

OVERALL

This OS is good for NEW and SLIGHTLY OLD PCs. As long as it can handle DX 10 your good but below... expect some VGA related problems. SCORE: 8.5/10

look for the WIndows 8 registry hack for netbooks. It might fix your issues and you can properly use the live tiles

Anything much more specific? I can use Live tiles perfectly fine too.

Windows 8 is too new for old hardware.

-----------------------------------------

Waiting for new hardware Win 8

Bug bug bug

I find that if one can run Windows 7 on a given hardware (however old or new,) - Windows 8 will also run equally good/bad just as Windows 7 does.

Microsoft Basic Visual Adapter is the driver MS uses on Windows which just does the bare basic so that you can get the display working somehow for installation purposes. You need to go to the website of your GPU manufacturer to get the real gfx drivers to get your display to work properly

I'm guessing you're using integrated graphics. In that case, you'll need to go to the Asus website > Support > and search for your motherboard model > Choose your OS (Choose Win7 for Win8 if they haven't updated for Win8 yet) and then look at "Display/Graphics/VGA Adapter" or similar and then download the file and install. Or go to Intel's website and download Win7 drivers for your gfx chipset. That will probably solve your issues ;)

Ok, you said that but I missed it. You can do 1 of two things then -

1. Add legacy Hardware to Win7/8. Log on as Admin > Computer > Right Click > Manage > Device Manage (Left Pane) > Right Click on PC Name (Right Pane top) > Add Legacy Hardware > Display/VGA > Intel 865G (Desktop WDDM 1.1) ....

P.S. - I'm posting from my Win8 installation. Couldn't find 865G here but maybe available on Win7. If not, try if 965G WDDM Desktop works. Worst case scenario - a Windows re-installation :P

2. Use DriverMax to see if that helps

My netbook is running:

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (Microsoft Certified - WDDM 1.0)

getting an overall Windows rating of 2.3 (desktop graphics) and Gaming graphics of 3.0

Ok I followed what you said and here is what showed up on the Device Status on Device Manager:

Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.

Also, DriverMax tried to update the driver and it ended up screwing it all over. The screen resolution choice has been grayed out but I saw that it can be fixed by re-installing the drivers so its now fixed.

Well, that's the extent of my knowledge 'bout these stuff :( To me, looks like you need a new el cheapo graphics card to run Win 7/8 on your system. You might consider getting a 20-30 dollar GPU and make make sure before dropping the cash that whichever one you choose, has Win7/8 drivers (with official Aero support) on the support site. :)

Your board supports only AGP and PCI cards so you'll have to get that instead of the PCIE ones. Make sure it's got a VGA or DVI port depending on what your monitor has support for. Else you'll need to get an adapter for the same.

Also, if you do choose to go down that road, make sure you at least have a 350-450 Watt PSU (check for compatibility first) depending on the card chosen. An old 250 Watt PSU is just not gonna be enough with no PFC and aged capacitors and maybe less than required Amperage on the +12V rail(s)

The other option would be to get a new board but I dunno 'bout the availability of DDR boards anymore :dunno:

Now, can anyone fix the Error Code?

Did you try to 'Roll Back Driver'

I didn't update the driver I kinda installed a separate adapter but sure I'll try that
