hi guys just wondering as Microsoft is detaching itself from it's old operating systems, what would be the best option to play some old dos and windows games as dosbox doesnt run many of them 100% ? is it best to run them on a VM or dual boot windows 95 with a x64 system like windows 7 or 8? will be there any problems in compatibility, drivers, etc as windows 95 is an early 32 bit os?

Let me caution you that Windows 7/8 will spit those games right back in your face.

Another emulator like DosBox is, SCUMMVM. But I doubt it will support the game you want. Otherwise, DosBox is, and will remain the best option.

As for Windows based 16-bit games, it is impossible to run it on 64-bit Windows. I don't think they even run on 32-bit Windows 7/8 (not sure though).

For that, I had specifically used TinyXP on my VM. But as you might expect, VM gives bad performance.

DOS Games or Windows 3.1 games --> use DOSBox (it's the best solution), ykhwong's DOSBox build is the best.

Windows 98/98SE games --> use VMWare (preferred) or VirtualBox, optionally you can try Microsoft's VirtualPC (Connectix's VirtualPC was the best solution for dos games, till Microsoft bought Connectix)

Windows XP games with 3D acceleration --> both latest VMWare and VirtualBox support 3D acceleration under XP

Other solutions: GOG.com game releases (you have to buy the games from them), many 3D engines for various games that support 3D hardware acceleration under Windows (like EDuke32, Duke3dw, SWP, GZDoom, Risen3D, D2X-XL, DXX-Rebirth etc. etc.), ScumMVM for many old adventure games and more (like Monkey Island series etc.), my old DOSBox Edition or High Resolution releases (I'm retired from all of this, for now).
