csmdew
A friend has an acer laptop that has the HD partitioned at 35gb for c and d drives and he is running out of space on c drive. I tried to shrink d and put the extra space in the c drive but I couldn't get it done. I can shrink d but can't merge the unallocated space with c drive and it appears that d drive is the primary partition since I can't merge d to c but can merge c to d. I tried a free partition manager to do the shrinks and mergers but could not get it done so my question is how can I move space from d drive to c drive. Also why would the os take up 20 gbs on c drive, thanks.
dcs18
A friend has an acer laptop that has the HD partitioned at 35gb for c and d drives and he is running out of space on c drive. As an average size, I find 50 GB to be suitable - this however, depends on the footprint of collective software that is proposed to be installed. I tried to shrink d and put the extra space in the c drive but I couldn't get it done. I can shrink d but can't merge the unallocated space with c drive and it appears that d drive is the primary partition since I can't merge d to c but can merge c to d. Find it excellent in handling unallocated space, merging, shrinking, etc., etc. Also why would the os take up 20 gbs on c drive, thanks. If it consists of merely the bare-metal OS, it shouldn't hog 20 GBs - Acronis allows me inspect the volumes for hidden partitions, pre-installation, etc., etc.
Administrator DKT27 Posted December 4, 2012 Administrator Share Posted December 4, 2012 I would myself use PerfectDisk's shrink.Either way, I have one principal for my system. Install only startup softwares in C: drive, install all the other softwares in other drive. Saves a lot of space.
csmdew
The one problem I continually had was trying to move space from d to c using easeus' free addition. I also tried to shrink d to an unallocated partition using vista's hard drive manager and then merge it to c but could not be done either. Will try with the these software listed here and see if I can get some movement, thanks.
robo
I also use Acronis and find it works great. Have you tried merging c to the unallocated space? you can only move the partition with the operating sysem one way if I remember right
dcs18
Have you tried merging c to the unallocated space? you can only move the partition with the operating sysem one way if I remember rightIf that question was directed at me, well my method is to not use the Merge feature - I select the NTFS partition (other than the unallocated one) and opt for the Resize instead of Merge function. Next, I use the drop-down to increase the size - this automatically draws the unallocated partition into the NTFS one and results in merging the two. ;)
robo
It was not directed at you but thank you for the information. I will try that in the futureThanks again
csmdew
I tried to merge the unallocated space I created by shrinking d drive part. to the c drive partition but could not. I never make anything like this myself and don't know why it was done but still I just don't understand why the unallocated space will not merge into c drive. robo
as above, did you try moving c into the unallocated space.I tried The Configurator's suggestion above and it worked really well and very easy. Why don't you start again doing what he suggested with Acronis
csmdew
if I merge c to unallocated area I won't lose the os or bootup will I; I really don't want to reload his os and programs.
dcs18
if I merge c to unallocated area I won't lose the os or bootup will I; I really don't want to reload his os and programs.Depending on the position at the food chain sector, you could lose the OS and all other data if you attempt to merge your primary partition to the unallocated one - understand, it needs to be the other way around (merge your unallocated partition to the C partition.) Read my previous post it's much more safer and convenient to use the Resize function instead of the Merge function.

Read my previous post it's much more safer and convenient to use the Resize function instead of the Merge function. I Have tried to resize the c drive but there is no space to get, unless I shrink d drive to make unallocated space, but I still could not get c drive to increase by taking the unallocated space. On my own pcs I always resize when I need to make changes and have never encountered the mess he has on his laptop (which I hate to work on anyway) which is why I'm asking here. When I tried to resize c all boxes were greyed out so I could not add the 25 gb that I had put as unallocated. Will give it one more try and then let him take it to the shop if I can't get it; I don't work on putters enough to make all fixes ppl want me to do. A degree in information tech and microarchitecture won't get it done without hands on. thanks .
csmdew
Close, this is hopeless cause, cannot make c larger with any method tried, so I just moved a few gbs of data to d drive.
mazigh
Try " MiniTool Partition Wizard Pro Edition " it's the best I had ever used, so simple and always works!, Free edition may not do what u r looking forNB: if it worked the software will ask for reboot then a little time to complete the job
