Repair: Services - The system cannot find the file specified

After doing some troubleshoot, using msconfig.exe (System Configuration) I used option Normal startup. I rebooted computer I run again msconfig.exe to verify. But, I sow Selective startup selected and that not all system services were started, actually they stayed disabled. I went to Services (services.msc) to enable those. I opened Properties, changed to Automatic, pressed OK and got the error: The system cannot find the path specified.

So, I couldn't start the service this way, but what was strange is that I could start it using Command Prompt and net start command. Then I opened Process Monitor to check out what happens when this message pops up. Process you should monitor is services.exe.

And the only thing suspicious to me was this:

And solution is that simple. For some reason, I didn't have the folder scm. I don't know what deleted it. It was a Kingsoft's cleaner tool. So, I went to C:\Windows\system32\logfiles and I created the folder scm. After that I tried to change the problematic service and I could change it to Automatic and it was possible to start it.

As I said, not all services had this problem. Here is the list of services that had this problem:

Application Experience

Application Identity

BitLocker Drive Encryption Service

Computer Browser

Bluetooth Support Service

DNS Client

Encrypting File System (EFS)

Human Interface Device Access

IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules

KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

IPsec Policy Agent

Adaptive Brightness

Tablet PC Input Service

Windows Time

WebClient

Portable Device Enumerator Service

Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework

As you can see, a lot of services were disabled by msconfig.exe and couldn't be enabled because of this issue, and all services above are system services.

I couldn't find this solution anywhere on Google, so I hope this will help someone.

Cheers ;)

  Did you read my post? Did you notice that I posted it in tutorials section? I'm explaining how to fix the issue. If you bothered to read, you would know it's not a problem with malware or registry entries.

Cheers ;)

It's possible. You just need to trace it with Process Monitor to see if that's the issue. I see now that this folder begin to fill with some logs.

There are the .reg scripts that restore all services to default values.

I can post it if you need it :)

That was my first thought. I compared keys for problematic services with my laptop and every key was the same, but problem remained. So, Process Monitor helped me to find the issue.

Cheers ;)

quote from wikipedia

Service Control Manager (SCM) is a special system process under Windows NT family of operating systems, which starts, stops and interacts with Windows service processes.[1] It is located in%SystemRoot%\System32\services.exe executable. Service processes interact with SCM through a well-defined API, and the same API interface is used internally by the interactive Windows service management tools such as the MMC snap-in Services.msc and the command-line Service Control utility sc.exe
