SATA-USB adapter

Have anyone ever used a SATA-USB adapter?

I recently have replaced my laptop internal HDD (2.5", 5400 rpm, 500GB HDD from WD)..I have 90% of data is backed up in my external HDD but there were 10% of data which was very important to me and those are in that internal HDD..

I am advised to use a software called HDD Regenerator to recover the data and I want to give it a try..

So, anyone who have used the SATA-USB adapter please tell me, Will it work? How much will it cost?

I am also heard about SATA-II..So is there any way to find out physically whether my HDD is SATA or SATA-II?

I have a 2.5 hdd enclosure I bought for around 10 usd dollars.

Works fine with my old laptop hard drive. Has two usb connections to attach it to computer. Apparently needs two to assure it has enough amps.

Bought from newegg.com here .. they also had a eSata enclosure for maybe 7 more dollars.. wish I had bought that now instead. I really didn't think I would use it except to gather personal files the one time... its USB 2.0 , and is fast, but eSata, my Lenovo laptop has a port for it.. I'm sure I would enjoy the quick system backups much more frequently if that drive was faster.

Little program called Speccy by the people that make ccleaner will show you quite a bit about your hard drive... real quick mine shows

SATA type SATA-II 3.0Gb/s and much more. (Q someone might know, is sata3 noticeably faster than sata2 for everyday use and system image?? , my laptop is sata3 rated)

Well, mikie Thanks aLOLtz for your share..

You gave me a good idea to buy SATA-eSATA adapter except SATA-USB..

And, the idea you told is to logically find out the HDD type..BTW, I have just found out in the label (physical) over the HDD that mine is Serial-ATA that means SATA.

I think SATA II is backwards compabile.

Also note that, HDD Regenerator is not a backup/copying software. It's a software that recovers damaged physical sectors of the hard drive. Making those sector readable again.

@mikie: SATA III has the speed of 6Gb/s. So yea, almost double in speed in wire transfer (but HDD, in the end, do remain slow though).

Yeah SATA-II is backward compatible..

I will use HDD Regenerator to make the drive readable and will recover data with HDD Machanic.

Yeah, for a 5400 rpm drive SATA 1.0 is sufficient.

Wsih you good luck with that HDD.

If it is physicaly damaged (bad sectors) I'm not sure that any software will make it good but it's worth to try.

If it's jut messed up and formated then there is good chance to recover all you need (if not used after failure).

Have been using SATA adapter for years, and it is good piece of hardware.

Personaly never used eSata, but other options like SATA, PATA used many times.

About software: I have been using Recover my Files for ages, and it is good, there is many other applications which is also good, but there is none magical app, just try and see what you get...

Like others say you can buy it for few dollars, sometimes you will need two ports for powering hdd.

When it comes to WD until now I have never need any external power supply (if HDD is 2.5").

And if you need power supply you can always use computer PSU to power HDD.

Wish you luck again and let us know is recovering successeful.

And sorry for my porr English.
