All Windows systems contain a “hosts” file that allows you to associate certain IP addresses with a domain name. This file is read and interpreted by the DNS client service in Windows. It’s the first priority in defining what your computer connects to when you type a domain name on your address bar or connect to a domain name through any other program, such as uTorrent. The “hosts” file overrides any request to a DNS server for a domain name resolution, meaning that you can override where your computer connects to by editing this file as you wish. Today, I’m going to teach you how to take advantage of this file in some ways that might make your life much more convenient.

is there a way to create an automatic redirection using hostnames instead of IP addresses via either the hosts file (or any other) method?

i.e., for example if i hit http://www.google.com that it should automatically be redirected to https://www.google.com

i use google as an example because google has multiple IP addresses pointing to google.com (so no fixed IP as would be the case with any other regular site)

@johndoe: Last time I checked, the host file didn't respect http/ftp/https stuff.

How about using Https Everywhere? :)

i know hosts file doesn't accept but is there any other method apart from browser addons?

even a way that it could be implemented at router level (i have dd-wrt which makes it fairly flexible) but basically at OS level and independent of browser so it can be implemented across all platforms, mobile browsers even...

I would like to know how blocks work in the hosts file. Whenever I add the premade block, it works fine; when I make my own, it does not work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

can you please attach the actual file itself

and by the way, one per line

this won't block anything after the one, the green one

that is exactly why i asked for it. it's not supposed to be a .TXT file. the hosts has no extension (like .TXT) at the end of it. see attachment inside the .RAR file

if you want, you can add your entries to this file and past it in the appropriate location

hosts.rar

It's not a text file originally, but it wouldn't let me upload the original file.
