Any mobile phones out there with good sound quality?

Like the title says. I'm looking for a music-oriented phone for my Senn headphones. Had custom drivers in my hacked SE K850i, now that the LCD is gone, I feel it's time for a change. Primarily, I'm looking for a dumb-phone with good music and buttons. In need, I could go for a cheap'o smart-phone (but I really don't want to break the bank here, nor do I subscribe to mobile network payment plans). I won't be using a separate DAC with the device, so an equaliser is probably a big plus.

Again, the music is paramount for me. Otherwise I could just buy a sansa clip and use my ancient K750 for the rest, but I really want to carry only one device. I've been looking at the XpressMusic series, they seem OK (don't know what to think of GSM Arena's tests :dunno:), I've also been browsing head-fi forums, and thought I'd ask for some advice here.

Oh, yeah. No Apple. Not enough money, can't order anything on-line from my country, and they are very gay.

I'm not audiophile, but my 5800 sounds really good, so I can recommend that. Little downside is that max volume should be higher but that's result of European laws.

Cheers ;)

Nexus S and first generation Galaxy S phones both contain the Wolfson WM8994 DAC. With supercurios Voodoo Sound app it turns the devices inti audiophile quality music devices. Both are realitively older and therefore should be much cheaper than current offerings.

Wolfson WM8994: http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/audio_hubs/WM8994/

Supercurios Voodoo Sound: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.controlapp&hl=en

You will obviously have to root either devices which is super easy.

Disclaimer: I am not supercurio nor am I advertising his work (hence the free version posted) I personally use his app with a Nexus S i9023 with rascarlo's rasbelly rom and a voodoo sound enabled kernel. I listen with V-moda Vibe Duos and V-moda M-80's if you search around XDA forums you can find other sound enhancement programs that do not require root or custom kernels but they do not match the quality of sound that voodoo produces, and if you want to go full audiophile check out neutron player on the market (costs money so no link).

> Sony Walkman series is the best budget alternative . The starter models arent that loud esp at max vol , but you can expect some decent quality with a good bass and high trebles .

> Another lil on the higher side , but still a budget option is to go for a med range Android phone , like the Galaxy Ace . Comes with a very good set of headphones . Believe me the bass response is heavy and loud and much better when compared to many high end phones .

Root this device and install the Cyanogen ROM and you have a much better music player with a very good equalizer in built .

Want more control and more power , Install the VooDoo Controls .

Excellent Low Bass response . tight and accurate .

My HTC One V has it. Though it seems to improve the sound quality a bit, I've read articles about how the build-in Beats Audio feature is nothing but automatic equalization and marketing gimmick.

Sad that they didn't provide Beats earphones.

:D

had me laughing ! The Beats headphones cost more than the phone itself ! :P

I havent heard the HTC phone , but yes i did read the previous gen Beats audio in HTC phones was better than the present ones .

But still the response as to how much it improves the audio quality is equivocal . yes and no .

By improvement they say , it effects the Sonics . That is the balance of Lows , Mids and Highs .

But i have heard the VooDoo Controls on an Android phone . Had it on my Galaxy Nexus and that was one thunderous music player . Excellent balance and the best thing was the BASS response . very tight and accurate . ( yes , given you have a good set of headphones ! )

That combination can eat any any iPod or other such player .

Even my present Galaxy Note 2 isnt no match for that sound .

( I have heard an iPod a lot . and leaving behind any Apple prejudice , i never liked it's sound quality . No bass . Too bright . Vocals on the top . The only good thing about the iPod sound is its handling of lows , mids , highs , i.e. various frequencies in a sound . its quite accurate . )

@mara: Heard great things about 5800 everywhere. I'm seriously tempted to try it out. What's the build quality like? Does the plastic screech with use and so on?

As far as smartphones go, I'm tempted by two models (besides 5800) right now: the amazing Nokia E90 and MILESTONE 2. As you can see, I love massive, quality-made casings. From the info that I have, audio quality can be improved and "tuned" by various software available for download. The Motorola seems to be the only "modern" Android I like, and I can buy it here for under 150 dollars. xD E90 I can get used, but in excellent condition for under $100.

While on topic, does anyone have any tips concerning Symbian vs. Android music quality, tweaks, available addons, etc...? From reading on the Internet, it seems that as far as SQ goes, smart is, well, smarter.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Android has Noozoxide and ACiD for non rooted phones (market for noozoxide and xda for ACiD) both increase sound quality. Neutron player for complete SQ control and 32 or 64bit processing, gonemad player or poweramp for good overall SQ with no real setup involved. Never messed with symbian always been an android kid since the release of the HTC Dream (G1) btw Motorola devices are a b**** to root due to encrypted bootloader and the like.

@Alanon

Quality is fine. I use protective cover on screen from beginning so it's the only thing scratched, back cover could be a little better. There is some peeling at the sides of it. I'm not aware of any tweaks regarding audio, except equalizer, but I customized it a lot, in fact I'm running C6 software on it.

Cheers ;)
