Disney now owns all of your childhood memories.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Walt Disney Company announced in a press release shortly before its investor call that it would acquire 100 percent of LucasFilm LTD for $4.05 billion, in cash and stock. In the press release, Disney also said it would invest in a Star Wars Episode 7 which would be released in 2015, "with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future."

Mickey Mouse will surely find many other ways to cash in on the beloved trilogy (and less-beloved, but still respected trilogy of prequels). "We also expect to utilize Star Wars in other businesses including Parks & Resorts, in games and in our television business. These initiatives were also considered in our valuation," Disney's press release said.

Disney's acquisition includes all the ventures of LucasFilm LTD, including the special effects powerhouse Industrial Light and Magic, as well as LucasArts and Skywalker Sound. "The present intent is for LucasFilm employees to remain in their current locations."

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," George Lucas was quoted in Disney's press release. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

During the Walt Disney conference call about the acquisition, the company said, "we plan to release one film every two to three years," after the seventh episode in 2015. It also said that while the Star Wars franchise is currently skewed towards "toys and North America," Disney planned to increase the "breadth and depth" of that appeal.

When asked during the conference call how realistic the next Star Wars movies are, Robert Iger, Chairman and CEO of Disney said, "What we're buying along with the overall company... is a pretty expensive treatment for the first three movies," which would be considered episodes 7-9 of the franchise. "We're in the early stages of creating the first movie."

Wow....Im not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I was hoping for Episode 7 and onward but now that I hear this news...I'm not sure if I really like it. I know Disney CAN get the job done...but I don't think they have the same visionary structure as George Lucas has. Let us hope that George Lucas will still be involved in the future episodes...at least in the directing parts.

Agreed. Problem is, I don't remember seeing a non-animated movie from Disney that doesn't concentrate on teenage stuff. I personally want class, inspiration, happiness, deep feeling I got from the original trilogy. Not some other kiddish movie. Make no mistake, my childhood passed by seeing Disney movies, but those movies were of class.

To be honest, I'm most shocked. As someone noted in comments of original article:

This is one of a few news articles in a very long time where I read the headline, went "huh?," read it again, checked the calendar to see if it was April Fool's, and followed up with a Google search. Now that I believe the headline, I can say is WOW.

What I'm even happier about is, I might see another Money Island video game. :)

Either way, it's like dream coming true. Not sure how will it be, but coming true is great.

Finally, Kyle Katarn will have a chance appear in the movie :D

Btw, if Star Wars Episode 7-9 will still be scripted or maybe (hopefully) directed by George Lucas, I think it shouldn't be a problem with the story ;)

Here's an interesting post on Arstech:

This entire conversation is based on the notion that Disney will control the theme and plot of future Star Wars movies.

Disney at one point was going to do direct to video crappy Toy Story sequels, but Pixar wisely convinced them to let Pixar make good sequels.

Disney bought Marvel and let them continue to do their thing with The Avengers.

Today's Disney is to allow each company their creative freedom. They announced today that Kathleen Kennedy is still running Lucasfilm and everyone is keeping their jobs. Steve Sansweet said Lucas already came up with the core stories, and Kathleen Kennedy has been running with them for months. These sequels were already in the works.

Disney said that they've basically picked up the option to produce the script treatments Lucas already started on. This isn't Disney creating their own version of Star Wars. This is Lucasfilm finally delivering their own version.
