ZoneAlarm Av+Fw Free boot issue on a PC with XP-SP3

AlienForce1

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I installed latest ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall 10.2.081.000 on a PC (Core2Duo , 2GB RAM , Windows XP Pro SP3) .

Reboot , updated and scanned all PC -> no malware found (I knew it already that the Pc is clean) , all was working fine .

I closed the PC .

After a few min. I started again that PC - it didn`t boot anymore  -> any advice ?

I did install this ZA Av+Fw Free on other PC-s (true , with Win.7 , not XP) , without any significant issues (other that a little boot slowdown , and memory hog) .

-> on this PC could be a conflict with another software , or driver ? (I have MBAM , on demand scan , without real-time active protection)

I could remove ZA , restoring C:\ partition from a previous Acronis Image -> what AV or IS do you suggest ?

Consider that the PC will be used by someone that doesn`t have any IT skills - would be better that the security sollution would solve the problems by itself , without questioning too much...

What should I choose ?

- Symantec Endpoint Protection

- Avast

- nod32

- Norton AV or NIS ? :s

Do that and try System Restore. If that's not possible then uninstall via Revo/Total or normal uninstall.

Which AV to use comes later, get it booting first.

Had you ever installed Kaspersky (of any caste, creed, gender and color) on this same PC that's brought you all the grief?

NO , I did scanned this computer with Rescue Disk from Kaspersky .

Ah, OK - Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm happen to share the same anti-virus engine and their conflict when East-meets-West is a well known issue.

So , what you suggest ?

Remember : it was a scan done from CD (kav_rescue_10.iso)

To the best of my knowledge, rescue disks do not leave tracks & traces and more importantly do not affect the resident anti-virus programs and it's quarantine, thereof.

Avira Free Av was installed on PC - but didn`t do it`s job -> the PC had a few trojans and PUP-s and I did cleaned with succesive scans with MBAM , ESET Online Scanner and Kaspersky Rescue Disk .

After that I uninstalled Avira and cleaned the remnants (also cleaned after uninstalling ESET) .

In case of a firewall and AV just try comodo internet security with the good settings for an non -iter

Good and effective ( anti virus only for people who doesn't travel on the wrong sites )

Firewall is excellent.

Yes , firewall is really good , but a little `chatty` .

As about the antivirus ... I wouldn`t use Comodo on my computer either , nor recommend it to someone who doesn`t know anything about computers and PC Security ...
