PsychoticxBloodxLust
ok decided to buy a new HDD i have decided to get either a 1TB or a 1.5TB from seagate with an ultra external case its a combo deal from tigerdirect.i decided to get teh 1.5TB since they released a firmware fix and less people are having any problems.they key is to call tech support and see about updated firmware before you install any new hardware when you build custom system like i do yes usualy a firmware update is not required but alot of times there bugs that are fixed and depending on the model, rev., and firmware version that have fixes.I'll let you guys know how things go with a review when it comes in tommoorw or wednesday and i get up and running with the vista x64 sp1 cd i downloaded from the MSDN site

PsychoticxBloodxLust
i fell in love with Seagate and the Seagate models are fairly priced, even though lots people have had issues with this model all 1.5TB's are well unstable at this point for what I'm doing, which is running the OS and everything off of it, even though the tech i talked to is doing the same. I need to do more research on the subject before i exchange it at Tiger Directwhich brings me 2 where i might be sending it back unless i figure out why it is lagging so bad ran perfect for the first 2 days now its having issues like opening files and running stuff it really slow... it not grinding nor has it ceased to work i think it might be a drive or some other bull crap i'll find out. i might just sned it back at get the 1TB on which like 950gig when installed as the 1.5TB is realy only 1398gig so I'm not losing a lot of storage anyway

PsychoticxBloodxLust
I will try that next if the drive goes screwy so fa using discwizard from seagate helped a little also not installing a optional nvidia sata drive from nvidia that seemes to be waht caused the last 3 corruptions woot i wi'' contact seagate support again after the holiday and let them know it is a dirve issue i have read of many peoples drive corrupting and it being a drive issue said think is they have no idea what drive is doing it... having said that i think its time for a mobo and cpu upgrade
PsychoticxBloodxLust
well hdd has been running strong just waiting for my last one to come in so i can auto rebuild in Raid 1, hopefully they send me the same serial number so all i have to do is run the firmware cd i have. then all i will have to do is get my 2 old seagate drives up to the same firmware version, maybe my raid setup will run beter then loloverall they have fixed all the issues the drives key is to make sure you have the latest bios for your board and if its nvidia make sure you using the latest drivers for sata i think i found a single sata driver update in windows update that is the culprite for corrupting the data on the drive once i decided not to install it.if anyone has any qestion regarding seting one up PM me, if you decide to get the drive download the discwizard from the seagate website to format the drive. PsychoticxBloodxLust
not bad i take it that is there 1TB edition? if so you have nothing to worry about the problemi was having and i am talking about exist on the 1.5 TB which aloth of them are refurbished and because of the firmware issues you are paying what $30 for 500 gigs more with really kickass acces times and usch i love mine but because of the larger you get the higher the failure rate i have a second one comeing in that hopefully is close to running the same firmware as my last one so all i have to do is flash it. nad set up a auto rebuild raid 1 config then i'll copy the data on my half as raid 0 and the flash them both to a matching firmware so maybe they run like the should then i'll pull one and make a 320gig external and probly install the other on an old desktop that i plan to turn into a server.also MR. update freak lol you and me should get along great and who knows maybe we can learn from each other or at least you learn from me. anywho like my setup in my sig not as bytchin as it was when i built it but still bytchin
Skidro
Gettin the firmware is not an issue as the software that comes with my maxtor updates the drivers from seagate... like as soon as i registered on the site it gave me an update - SATA Driver Upgrade that was supposed to resolve the issue "Error-checking (scan disk in Windows Vista) stops in the middle." So, its cool i say...So im away from my home base for a coupl of years more, n since i keep movin i had to resort to using a laptop for now... thats should explain the maxtor... cant wait 2 get home n get myself a new system and the works.. thats wen i'll crack the shell on this maxtor (its got no screws) n use it as an ide.... hope it survives the ride till then.I guess ur the only other guy here who endorses vista... i had no other option since sony don giv away the drivers for xp.just some info - I thot that the max non external powered USB HDD that i coud find was 320gigs... however i saw an imation drive 500 gigs non extrnl powered for 200 bucks... reviews say its slow but 4 som1 lik me if u can carry 2.5" of 500 gb, ders nothin lik it! LeetPirate
Does Seagate still offer the 5 years warranty?I just want to inform you guys that this is the most difficult warranty to use. Seagate forces you to do some of the most specific rules about packaging and sending the HDD back to them that if you fail at any of their rules they refuse to honour the warranty. Coincidentally the only way to fulfil their packaging rules is to purchase a special container that is only available at Seagate so there you have it, if you don't believe me just read some reviews on Newegg.com. Oh yea, Seagate has poor reliability for HDD now, WD has much better user reviews and they all have PMR even though it isn't marketed as having PMR in the lower end blue models. I mean seriously if they advertised that the blue models were just as good as the black models then less people would pay more for the black models. Seagate probably still has more platters on their 1.5TB hdd than WD or Samsung so that's always a higher probability of something going wrong and greater heat output. Administrator Lite Posted February 9, 2009 Administrator Share Posted February 9, 2009 Atleast in the UK it is the responsibility of the retailer (not the manufacture) to honour any warranty stuff.
