Windows 8 has five times less pre-release users than Windows 7

Compared to its predecessor, Windows 8 is getting a very chilly pre-release reception. Usage numbers are currently five times below those of Windows 7 a month before its release, at just 0.33% of PCs.

Bill Gates is definitely excited about Windows 8, but the rest of the world might not be – compared to Windows 7, Microsoft’s new OS is seeing far lower pre-release usage stats. And that’s a bad sign in itself, since it gives us an idea of how excited users are to get their hands on the new OS.

Alright, so Windows 8 isn’t even out yet – it shouldn’t matter how many people are using it, right? Well, that’s true to an extent, but a whopping 1.64% of Windows users felt like installing a pre-release version of Windows 7 a month before it was released. Compared to that, only about 0.33% of users are running Windows 8; five times less. To put that in perspective, Windows 7 already had as many users as Windows 8 six months before release.

Again, this doesn’t mean that a lot (read: most) of users are necessarily going to skip Windows 8. Tablets, paired with insanely cheap upgrade costs, just might save it. But it’s still a worrying sign, and you can bet that Microsoft is anxiously watching these numbers as the days until release tick away. Then we’ll really see what the world thinks of Windows 8.

lol. Have fun MS, with your game changing OS, have fun (till it lasts).

Simple things that can/could avoid the disaster:

  • Bring back the start menu as an option.
  • Allow metro apps to be downloaded outside the market.
  • Keep in mind that you are making a OS for PC and power users, not some Nokia lovers who still think Nokia makes the best smartphones. Lumia 920 & 820 might be good, but having a new camera doesn't make it a best phone.
Windows 8 is flawed by principal. It thinks it needs to beat Apple, Google in their own game. Sure they do, but not by sacrificing your own worshippers.

The difference was 1 beta release on Win7 vs 3 different "previews" for Win8.

Also, I used the last preview, and to be honest I don't miss much the start button. The first week maybe, I did, but honestly I can still hit the Win key and type and app name, hit anter and it will open up.. so the functionality is still there. I think most people complaining didn't even bother to try the preview..

As far as metro modern menu, you are still just one click away from the desktop, when you can do exactly the same as before... To me it is like everytime facebook changes its look, people complain and they adopt it.. if MS is lucky the same will happen if not.. well let's see what happens.

Frankly, I didn't either - not for the first 10 minutes until I realized that I was not wearing my glasses.

Windows 8 - more leaked builds than Windows 7 (when things were being made), then totally free developer preview, consumer preview, leaked ISOs (same as Windows 7).

On Windows 7, hit start menu once, navigate with scroll, click, done. On Windows 8, move your hands to keyboard and type all the time, waste time and energy. Then click to start. People who are not regular in using computers might take weeks, and still won't like it.

On each start, you have to click to go to desktop, which is not only annoying, but disgusting move from MS. From what I had read, MS did that to prevent people from using desktop and start using only Metro and metro apps.

LOL, yeah - Windows 8 Users, if you can fondle a dame on your lap with one hand while simultaneously posting here with the other, like me . . . . . . . . . . . . . only then respond. :showoff:

Actually this works exactly the same on win 8

On Windows 8, move your hands to keyboard and type all the time, waste time and energy.

This is very arguable in the sense that it is more effective to use the keyboard. Point taken this would be for power users. But trully you don't need extra steps to launch from the metro menu compared to the start button. Have you really used it?

Yes, 100% agree, it is annoying, But if you think in the common user, what do you do when you are in the desktop? you open the browser and you check your mail, facebook and that stuff.. or in this case the metro menu gives you instant access.. so you lose one thing for the other. Still the actual success of this will depend on apps being developed.. and if you ask me, at the risk of sounding inconsistent, I do prefer the desktop, but I don´t think this is the catastrophe that was Win Vista... at least this one isn't slow.

Let's see what happens.. at least for the next couple of years we can stick with win7.

I know for a fact that I used the Win7 RC builds on my PC, getting rid of XP before installing the RTM 7600 build. It took me all of 10-15 minutes to uninstall the Win8 DP build and format the partition clean ;)

Yep, that's right - I'm keeping fingers crossed (waiting for Windowblinds to be compatible with Windows 8 before changing to Windows 8.) :)

The I take you are the kind of persons who just obey what they see on the screen and never dare to try for themselves..

Win 8 to be hit, Believe It or Not. Win 8 shatters Win 7 sales records next year. :showoff:

Thank you Sir/Ma'am, on your insightful observation ;)

See you next year!

Being non-biased, Windows 8 will won't be able beat Windows 7 market share for quite some time. Statistically speaking, Windows 7 took almost 2 years, to beat XP, inspite of Vista already released in middle. With many many people avoiding Windows 8 altogether, when Windows 8 gets near Windows 7, we will already be getting ready for Windows 9.

Stats have shown, that if there's something seriously fucked up, lots of users avoid using that thing, whether it's Windows or some physical product.

I could see it in advance.

It certainly is, which could be different and better. When I used the first time, Windows 8, I was pretty angry. Not realizing anything. Quite a few weeks and would love to go. Person always works better if you do not live it rides.

Microsoft can make a good OS, but drivers still do not work properly.

Windows XP ==> convert==> Windows Vista, 7, 8, Blue.

I think I might have to leave the same platform, but Windows 8 will bring accessories in .

Example: I use Win XP and I add a Windows 8 Theme Pack, UAC, start menu, safety etc.

Then the compatibility, etc. remain the same.

By the way, I am liked Win8 8888 aero, it's respectable. That may be.

I hope that was not too confusing text

Just an opinion.
