Yup. Audacity all the way. The simplest one out there, and that's a must for me. I simply don't need all the extra features - the time it takes me to find and use the simple ones is time lost, because they are the main parts of Audacity.

Also, you can plug-in iZotope Ozone into it, and you have a $900-worth simple digital workstation that runs light on systems up to 4 or 5 years old.

there is different category of audio software so i can't compare them

Audition and Avid Pro Tools is DAW and Sound Forge is sound editor

There is a lot of debate that goes into both which DAW is the most popular and which is the best. Many will say that Cubase is the most popular or Pro Tools or Logic. It all depends on perspective (who you see using what and where you are looking from). I have spent a lot of time around professional studios, and it is obvious that in them and for the people around them Pro Tools is king.

Cool Edit Pro 1.2

Cool Edit Pro later became Adobe Audition. I have been using Adobe Audition 1.5 ever since :) I love it.

Would probably say Adobe Audition. But only like Audition 1.5 as it can import video easily - and then you can edit the audio (or sync it). Currently have CS5.5 installed though.
