Need some dvd help please

I do not normally step into the dvd circle, being content to allow the experts

to handle this area, so my knowledge is admittedly a bit weak when it comes to

copy/ripping a dvd.

First, this is not about some movie or music concert or tv show or any other entertainment.

This is about my grandfather. Enough said on that.

I really need to be able to unlock this damn dvd and properly copy it to my system so that I will be able to burn useable copies for my family.

I have a wide variety of programs, and I have spent 2 days trying to do this, but as I said above, I am not an expert.

All of the attempts I have made have stopped at about 1% with an error about a sector not recovered, yet the dvd will play on a regular dvd player, also on my system, but not as easily.

Here is a sample screen shot of what the dvd video directory looks like, which is completely fubar to me....

post-34822-0-99433200-1341272126_thumb.p

This is just a partial view, it has 99 files listed, which as you can see, each file is split into 3, so I am looking at 33 files times 3.

As I said, I have installed and attempted a WIDE variety and combination of software in the last 2 days, without success.

Please, I could really use a quick simple do it this way reply.

Thank you for your time

I don't know what programs you tried. This is what I would try:

-DVD Ranger

-DVDFab

-AnyDVD + CloneDVD

All can be found at Softexia.

Try copying the .vob files that are ~200MB to your hard drive. You may lose the original menu from the DVD but you can use Nero or other DVD authoring software to add the copied files (.vob), create your own menus, and create an ISO or DVD. :)

Thank you for your advice.

After retrying programs that have been suggested,

and yes I had them, I tried a different approach.

You see, I never did test my set up.

So, I grabbed a movie that I own...Batman Begins for the curious,

and tested whether or not I could copy/make an image of a dvd.

Guess what???

My set up works perfectly. Took less than 20 minutes to create an ISO of the dvd.

Soooo....

I dug back into this not so professional dvd....

As it turns out, there are corrupt sectors somewhere in the beginning titles that are not repairable.

The dvd will still play, but trying to create an iso without beginning sectors is sort of like throwing a deck of cards into a strong wind and expecting them to land in order.

I believe the dvd medium itself probably had some bad sectors on it, and a gang recording unit was used to produce it.

there are 5 copies that I know of..no more. I have access to two of them, including the one I am currently struggling with.

I will let you know if the other one is more successful. ^_^

AlienForce1

I had a similar problem with Ice Age DVD (copy protection) - I could watch the DVD in the DVD player , or computer , but any attempt to copy it leaded to errors...

I solved the the problem with a program that removes that copy protection - DVD Shrink - it`s free (and you can do more with it) you can read more about it here : http://www.filehippo...load_dvdshrink/ or here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/DVD-Shrink.shtml

  • 3 months later...

I recommend DVD Shrink and DVD decrypter. They are two programs no longer being updated for copyright reason but are available on the internet and as far as I've seen the best DVD ripping software to date. I've never had a problem with them at all. Good luck!
