Using a data set consisting of 120,000 data points, researchers from OPSWAT estimate that Avast is the market share leader in the antivirus software market.

In an over-crowded antivirus software market, end and corporate users are often finding it difficult to differentiate between a value-added market proposition, next to the “me too” vendors of solutions. As in every other market segment, any scientific insight into the market share of various vendors offers an invaluable perspective into the market dynamics, what are customers purchasing, and most importantly, are they living in a world of ‘false feeling of security’.

Using a data set consisting of 120,000 data points, researchers from OPSWAT recently released an informative overview of the antivirus market, answering an important question - which is the most popular antivirus vendor?

According to their findings, that’s avast! Free Antivirus, followed by Microsoft Security Essentials and ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

Detailed market share statistics:

  • Avast - 17.4% worldwide market share
  • Microsoft - 13.2% worldwide market share
  • ESET - 11.1% worldwide market share
  • Symantec - 10.3% worldwide market share
  • AVG - 10.1% worldwide market share
  • Avira - 9.6% worldwide market share
  • Kaspersky - 6.7% worldwide market share
  • McAfee - 4.9% worldwide market share
  • Panda - 2.9% worldwide market share
  • Trend Micro - 2.8% worldwide market share
  • Other - 11.1% worldwide market share
Microsoft is the market leader in North America, followed by Symantec and AVG. Not surprisingly, the market leading avast! Free Antivirus is relying on the so called “freemium” business model, where the company grows and gains market share by offering a free alternative of their software, and earns revenue thanks to the successful conversion of free users to paid ones. Earlier this year, the company announced that it has 150 million active users worldwide, a clear indication of a working “freemium” business model.

Just how relevant is antivirus nowadays? In a recently released study entitled “Measuring the Cost of Cybercrime“, researchers argue that less money should be spent on purchasing antivirus software, and more money in tracking down and prosecuting cybercriminals. Next to these conclusions, F-Secure’s Mikko Hypponen recently admitted that antivirus software failed in Stuxnet and Flame’s cases, provoking more discussion on the actual applicability of antivirus software in today’s mature cybercrime ecosystem.

What do you think? In antivirus software still relevant in the age of Stuxnet, Duqu and Flame, the so called poster kids of the DIY targeted attack toolkits and weaponized malware releases? Do think free antivirus is offering a ‘false feeling of security’ compared to subscription based license models?

and sometimes...being popular isnt exactly the same thing as being overrated, as it may have just been a well deserved one.

imho..avast has been just as good as eset

edit: v6 and v7 to be specific :P

Just couple of days ago I read a post on neowin:

The biggest security hole exists between the keyboard and the chair.

Nevertheless, Avast seems to have taken away the most used free AV crown from AVG, which in my opinion never deserved it in the first place.

Well guys, popular, best

A good system runs a firewall and a antivirus program @ the same time.

Or if you like so a Internet security suite... ( but I think you don't need that ) cause these Software slows down the system even if you have a speedy computer.

So I think that every anti virus software does his job well ( and a lot of test I dont think you can relay on them ).

Just download one of the free firewalls and combine it with a free antivirus.

Configure it well in your needs and trust the applications.

And most of all be carefull out there, on the electronic highway there are a lot of assholes out there trying to steal something of you.

So just watch your back........

Wouldn't like to believe most of what gets written by statisticians & reviewers, but I know for a fact that most :pirate: :pirate: seem to prefer NOD32.

So, the one glaring fact that no one seems to notice.......

  • Avast - 17.4% worldwide market share
  • Other - 11.1% worldwide market share

It seems that there is only a 6.3% difference between the most popular and the most...unknown.

I do not put much stock on useless statistics. Nor should anyone else.

The most popular AntiVirus is a freeware known as The Brain 'cause everyone has it (well, almost everyone.) :P

Now this is a statistic that I believe. :)

Have noticed that most systems come pre-installed with Norton - that could account for the perceived popularity of Norton products. :dunno:

AVG detects and removes things without user interaction which is very bad for anyone downloading keygens/cracks. I use avast! because it actually ASKS me if I wanna delete it or quarantine it.

Quite to the contrary actually. If most people had that thing called 'The Brain', the world would be a better place to live ;)

And McAfee. Every other PC maker seem to be giving away 'Free' McAfee, which inevitably turns out to be a 3 month or so subscription. Such misleading advertisement!!! :wtf:

To be honest, i don't use any real-time protection antivirus. I just run malwarebytes and trojan remover to periodically scan my pc at least once a day and practice safe browsing :showoff:

Also, BitDefender scored higher than all the other vendors tested in a March/April report published by AV-Test.org.

BitDefender scored with 17 out of 18 possible points. With respect to OPSWAT market share, though, they are in “Other”.

Kensek

:wtf:

When you compare those two (malwarebytes and trojan remover) with a good AV you know that you have a small / limited nr. of malware detection and removal capability - you are exposing yourself to an useless risc -> and think of how much time of your day you are losing every day (``at least once a day``) scanning your computer with both anti-malware engines , instead of having one AV with real-time protection `on` ... really I can`t understand this attitude ... anyway it`s your time / computer ... B)

... or maybe this way you guys think it`s cool not having AV with real time protection ... well , then I`m not cool at all ...

Yes, i kinda agree of you... but for me antivirus is just kinda disturbing... please read this: http://lazybit.com/i...se_an_antivirus (I agree with him) and http://www.itproport...-use-antivirus/

The main reason, my pc is low at perfomance... btw, i'm not that paranoid for not getting virus at all. I am a home user and I frequently made backup of my pc, also, i know how to handle these problems manually, such as checking at task manager for weird processes.. i tweaked my pc at ultimate perfomance, in my task manger only have 13 processes at startup.

I live in Malaysia, i think this country don't involved (i guess so :P) in cyber attacks like happened at US and other modern country. Yeah maybe i'm sounds stupid but... i just believe in myself and yeah, b

eing aware is often far more effective.

Sorry for the bad English ~

It`s your choice to not use AV , but be aware that exists malware that can`t be seen in Task Manager .

In your country is really frequent JamBanMu malware (quite dificult to remove) and some others like it ...

Good luck !

I remember when THE free one to use was AVG. Years ago before I knew much about it. Then Avast appeared and probably millions of users switched to it, so I can believe Avast is the most used. Now days the free and paid are both very good so it got even more popular over time. THE Free AV for people who aren't really interested in them.

I bet Microsoft count everyone that has Windows Defender installed :D

I would think Norton would be 2nd as it comes on so many new computers.

I just re-read the first post.

Using a data set consisting of 120,000 data points, is that 120,000 users? If it is that's a small minority so not the whole world
