You'll get as many answers as different AV that exist...just one advise : test them all and see by yourself wich one is ok ;)

Use Sandboxie. It may seem off the topic(according to you) dude but Sandboxie is effective even against Rootkits.

What's the reason for using the condition 'free.' My understanding is that everything (including Antivirus) is free on this site, unless I'm missing something, here.

The best free AV imho is Avast. But Avira and AVG comes close in that order of preference, Microsoft Security Essentials is not in the same league yet. The level of real world protection they offer is almost equal, so chose the one that fits better to you.

A good security setup for most uses would be: Avast Free + Windows Firewall with Malwarebytes Free as a second opinion antimalware.

Exactly. So the question would be which anti-virus solution to use in general, and it only makes the matter more difficult. For the simplest solution, go ESS, it's set and forget, and still powerful enough for the above average user to configure. With T-nod it will feel like a free solution. :D

I would also go for Kaspersky, if you can bear the impact, and don't mind the serial hunt. I would also recommend Webroot woth Sandboxie and HIPS. :)

If you persist on a legally free AV, go Avira, but keep in mind that it's YOU that'll be using whichever of the products, and it must feel effective to you. In that regard, in reality, any of the top 5 will do just fine. ;)

Rocketman. gave you good answer. Almost every Antivirus on Nsane.down is free with the help of Keygen, patch and trial reset. So, what made you think of considering free antivirus. But, if really going for Free-Antivirus then I would recommend Avast or Avira (both are good) for addition layer of security you can use Comodo Firewall with Defense++ (it also has Sandbox) (Plus it also change your DNS for addition layer of security) or use Free best HIPS called Malware Defender adding WinPatrol with it.

Depends on the rest of you security software. Do you have a certain firewall to use with it? A sandbox? A virtual or rollback anything? etc etc

What do you use the pc for? Spec and more etceteras :D

I'm not sure WinPatrol would agree with MD? (WinPatrol is the dog thingy, right?)

I believe so. But there is no harm in checking WinPatrol with Malware Defender, since they will not conflict with each other like Antivirus's...Basiclly, WinPatrol is not a replacement for HIPS. Whereas, MD is going to protect more like Comodo Defense++. Or download DefenseWall (HIPS and Firewall) from Nsane.down

Bitdefender Free Edition uses the same ICSA Labs certified scanning engines found in other Bitdefender products, allowing you to enjoy basic virus protection for no cost at all.

Not bad choice..But, again you might need additional security like Firewall and HIPS.

Hell, might be. Haven't used WinPatrol in ages. XD

If I remembered correctly, it has many functions that are already in MD. Ih has a startup entries analyser, a running processes manager, services setup (Those are the main functions of WinPatrol, right? XD)

I remember using it, until I installed MD.

I'd reinstall it to check, but I'm lazy. XD

You are correct, but WinPatrol is merely an analysing software rather than alerting and blocking unwanted programme that can change registry and Windows directory.

Well, if you don't want to bother him, get something like Avast (maybe even setting up Avira would work). I wouldn't go for AVG personally, always found it horrible. As for Comodo, well, some people swear by it, and it really does get good results in tests, but I've never been able to get it to run properly on my PC (slowdowns, memory hog, etc.), so for Comodo, you really need to try it on the machine, and see how it acts. If it runs smoothly, leave it as is, if not, cut it from the machine.

Hope this helps. ;)

Good recommendation. Avira is great AV, even according to VB 100, it has a good detection rates. However, it needs some twicking. Avast is good but its not so good in removal and quarantine. AVG, on other hand, is OK AV, not so bad in detection and removal, personally, I wouldn't go for it. Comodo, according to some people is good since, comparing to other security suites it packs with very good modules in Comodo Internet Security, however, it has biggest setback which is, it finds alot of false positive, which makes people confused about removal, quarantine or ignore, which can really mess things up. Personally, I will advise either go for Avast or Avira combing with Comodo Firewall and Defese++ (by enabling Sandbox).
