A new service called Calltrunk allows people to search phone conversations they have recorded and stored on the internet without the other person's knowledge.

The service, which is available on smartphones as well as for landlines and video calls on Skype, lets its users upload recorded calls to an online account and search the contents of their phone conversations.

It is being billed as "similar to the way people search their store of old emails", but will worry some people as the person on the other end of the line will not necessarily be notified that they are being recorded.

Although storing recordings of phone calls is legal, the ease of use of the new service could lead to privacy and security concerns.

Calltrunk's new search function, called ARGOsearch, allows people to search their store of phone calls for certain spoken words, phone numbers and dates.

The service then scans the user's store of recordings for that search term. Calltrunk claims it will "transform the way people will view conversations".

Announcing ARGOsearch, Calltrunk's founder Paul Murphy said: "Until now anything even close to this has been the expensive domain of very big companies.

"ARGOsearch changes that completely. Enabling everyone to capture store and search their recorded calls means we can all hold on to knowledge and important moments that previously slipped through our fingers."

The service charges 8p per minute of recording or on a subscription basis.
