I installed Norton Utilities and Ran it. It deleted and cleaned a lot of files from my PC. And the end of the scan it said ntuser.dat can't be deleted and would be deleted on the next boot. & since then everytime i start I can't log in to my default profile. I'm logged in some temp profile.

Please advice how can retrieve my default username/profile

Also the system restore is blank.

HELP!!!

It's doubtful, but maybe you'll be able to 'fix' it by running the SFC /SCANNOW tool.

I have ran into this issue a couple times. Its a pain to fix. Before I go into explaining and finding the link to the fix, is wiping your system and reloading it out of the question?

ntuser.dat is a registry file. It contains the entire contents of the HKEY_LOCAL_USER branch of the registry. It will grow as you install more software that creates keys and sub keys in this branch of the registry. Why the hell would NU delete it? But if it did you are screwed, unless you have a backup. g/l

I hate norton Ut. I've tried all methods. But nothing seems to retireve my default profile.

And wierd thing is I see in program files of the temp profile, all the installed applications are there.. but I cant find Chrome, Firefox, Opera folder. So looks like I've lost all my bookmarks, passwords and favorites.

Anyone know if atleast these can be retreived...as other files are like doc, mp3 , movies etc are visible.???????????????

Its one of the reasons I ditched Norton Utilities few months ago. I used to really like the product, but it was a pain to live on with, so I had to ditch it. About recovering your files, if you have access to any other computer, download Ubuntu, transfer it onto a flash drive and boot your affected computer from the flash drive. Once loaded, you'll have access to your hard drives, and can retrieve them to an external hard drive if you have one, or burn them onto a disc, or just save them on another flash drive. I'm not sure if you can save the files on the same drive as Ubuntu, but it didn't work for me and I lost lots of important files that way, so I would recommend that you recover your files to another media. On the other hand, if you have Ubuntu boot disc, boot from the disc and transfer your files to a storage media and format your computer. I'm not sure how you can fix it, or if you'll be able to fix it, either ways, good luck :)

Another thing, just wanted to say that if you have Windows disc, try using System Restore.

I'm not sure if I were of any help, but its good to know you've fixed the issue. Now dump Norton Utilities and get Crap cleaner.
