Administrator DKT27 Posted February 25, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted February 25, 2012 The software itself is fully, actively developed. But the devs release a stable version only after 12 months a so.I meant it's slow on conversion, at least on the computers I've tried it. Maybe because it has no CUDA support. Although the conversion quality is very good. :DIndeed, the quality is probably the best. As for speed I guess it depends on the CPU then. It utilizes all my cores and is faster than Mediacoder. But I do agree, GPU acceleration would be nice, however, totally unlikely.Quoting from the HandBrake forums:Do a search for "CUDA" on these forums and you'll get your answer. You might also want to do a bit of internet research. Google search CUDA + x264. You'll find lots of interesting reading.Short answer, CUDA s-u-c-k-s donkey. There are no plans to add another H.264 encoder to HandBrake. If the encoder we currently use (x264) adds support for some form of hardware acceleration (be it CUDA, Stream, OpenCL or even Quick Sync Video), handBrake will automatically get it when we update to the latest x264 revision. Hasn't happened yet, however.Handbrake is a frontend for other programs (x264, ffmpeg, etc) which do the actual encoding. You will need to ask the devs of those programs, although chances are no-one will be interesting in writing anything Windows specific.Yes, CUDA and similar technologies can provide a speed increase. However, that increase comes at a large and unreasonable drop in quality with regard to the encoded video. You can get similar speeds at that quality simply by changing your x264 encode settings. Pedrito
DKT27, you were right it is indeed fast, very fast! I tried a nightly build and I converted a 2 hours movie in less than 30 minutes, they did changed the speed of conversion, with a little quality loss. You barely notice it. I am truly amazed! :w00t: Although there's something I couldn't figure out yet, how to convert the audio to 5.1. :sI used all the available options and the final result always gives me a file with 2 channels only. Although if I check the file on MediaInfo it says 5.1, but if I play it either on my computer or on my TV on a media player it says Stereo only. Any help about this will be much appreciated. :D

Administrator DKT27 Posted February 28, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted February 28, 2012 is it really that good app? :wub:Its frontpaged. And most, if not total 100%, of the softwares on FP are either good or great. :)@Pedrito: Glad that you liked it. Unfortunately, I don't have that many 5.1 audio files nor I have any media player. But kinda odd though, if mediainfo says it's 5.1, it has to be 5.1. Does the encoded file have 2 audio (one stereo and one 5.1)? I don't really know otherwise. Maybe you can try playing with the options on the Audio tab (Audio codec, Audio Mixdown, etc.). ;)It should be noted though. HandBrake is kinda advanced and seems to be aimed particularly at advanced users. Also, as I've mentioned before, as far as I know, people in the scene use it. ^_^

Pedrito
I got it, I had to change it on the Audio Mixdown. Now it shows 6 channels everywhere I play it. Thanks for the help DKT27. :DNo more Freemake Video Converter for me, this one is as fast and the quality is much better.@babelpatcher: Yes it's a very good app, although you should install and try a nightly build. The final version is very slow.@rudrax: Well, you can and you should. :PBy the way, the movie I encoded to test the nightly build was; "Bram Stoker's Dracula" it's a 128 minutes movie and it was encoded in less that 30 minutes on a laptop using an Intel CPU: i5-2410M @2.36GHz. The original is from the DVD so it has several languages and subtitles, which I could also add but I didn't. I did try and add a subtitle just to see how it looks like, and it's pretty good too and it wasn't burned in, so we can deactivate the subtitles anytime. But I decided to leave only the English 6 channel audio. I am very happy with Handbrake, they changed it for so much better now. :win:
