UltimateDefrag 2008 build 2.0.047

Marik

Recommended Posts

UD2008.pngUltimateDefrag is the Ultimate Defragger and File Placement Optimizer. Defragging hard drives helps to restore your hard drive performance. File placement optimizing on the other hand, boosts your theoretical hard drive file access performance by up to 300% of manufacturers quoted averages (typical performance increase you'll experience is between 25 and 100%) by placing the files you want performance from onto the faster performing (outer tracks) areas of your hard drive. With UltimateDefrag - you can specify which individual files, programs or games you want the best performance from. The "Archive" function places all of your unused files out of the way and onto the slower performing areas of your hard drive.

Thanks to Shought and AeonFulx for the update and jfe for the crack.

I think, maybe, you should add AeonFulx to the credit list too. He 'notified' me in this post. Oh, and while your at it :P (joking here, you don't have to add any of them if you don't think it's necessary) you could add chimal too, for the crack information posted here.

To come back to aaaa's question which i was about to answer while Marik went ahead closing the topic :frusty: , which is his job of course :) :

Does anyone know if this version do the complete job even without the boot time module?

btw, thanks for the info and the release.

How do you mean 'the complete job'?

UltimateDefrag is (IMO) the best defragmenting program available. For the one and only simple fact that it puts data you use the most to the outer tracks and data you don't use that much or not at all out of the way on the inner (lower performing tracks). This is what makes UD so special :P

There are some files which can't be deragmented whilst Windows is running. (Paging File, MFT, some system files and mystery files with $ in their names...)

UD 2007 is small, light on resources and gets the job done.

Is UD 2008 just a comestic improvement or a real performance upgrade?

Thanks, Shought.

When I said complete job I meant really defrag, not something like the built-in defrag of XP.

I still have a problem even with this latest version. After analysing my C drive & then going to check what files are fragmented via volume info the program crashes, so I'm never able to check what files are fragmented on my C drive, but I can check files when I try on my other drive. I'm stumped as to what the problem could be causing this. :) Anyone have a clue?

By far the best defrag tool. I used to use O&O but UD is 1000 times better, just needs to be configured properly to get the best performance, read the help file to learn how and try a few settings till you get it right. but whatever you do it it'll be better than anything else you've used before.

My 2 cents.

Hmmm, i don't really recommend the 'Auto method', but in some cases it can be the best. It depends on how far back you installed your system. I myself installed this new system +/- 15 days ago so in that case the 'Auto method' isn't the best option, the 'Consolidate method' has always proven to be the best for me.

What I meant was in the Tools -> Options, which settings are best here =)

Prepare for some reading! Grab some coffee, yuck, and some cookies, yammie. Ok, now you're set, read on.

There's never (in my knowledge) been made a guide about what folders to pick for archive and what folders to pick for performance. Except maybe for the included Help PDF from UD which does contain a brief explanation on what and what not to pick. You should carefully read that, it'll take you 10-15 minutes, but when you finished reading it you'll understand every little bit of hard drive performance and you'll be able to make a much better custom selection of files and folders.

I might be writing a guide about what folders to pick where, but in the main time i'll just present you my best configuration(for the moment):

I assume you use Windows XP? If not half of the things i mention here are useless to you.

Archive:

Wildcards:

- *.rar files(Believe it or not, but these files are 'Archives', wonder where they belong...)

- *.zip files(''Same as above'')

- *.cab files(Same as above, with the difference these are much used as Installer Archives)

- *.avi(Personal preference, i download A LOT of movies and mostly i just keep them on my HD until and after i burn them. I've got RW DVD's so i might delete the some time and have to burn them again or there might be something wrong with the subtitles, so i always keep the .avi files until i've watched the movie(s))

- *.mpeg(''Same as above'')

- *.mpg(''Same as above'')

- *.wmv(''Same as above'')

- *.mov(''Same as above'')

- *.vob(These are special, these are files created when i convert a video file into a dvd. Most of the time they aren't on my PC for very long because i watch most movies right after i converted them, but sometimes they are and then i want them to be out of the way)

- *.mp3(Large music collections, i only use this option when i run out of space. Because i listen to my music very much so i don't want it to be slow :P)

- *.wma(''Same as above'')

- *.aac(I don't use this, but you might)

Automatic:

I don't select anything here... Because i might not have used some of my programs (In Program Files) and they would be placed in the lower performing areas that way.. Where i don't want to have them :P In any case this value would depend on the available and used HD space. My HD is (naturally, 15 days ago installed) nearly empty so i put it to 0, but when you've installed your system for a few months(3 or more) you can easily put the value 50-50 if your system is getting a bit full, but if it's not you might as well chose to keep it on 0 or make it a low value, like 10 or something. As i said, there isn't a 'best'. If you could give me some more information about your HD capacity and usage i would be glad to give you some tips on how to set these values :frusty:

Custom:

'C' can be any drive letter here.

- In case you use MS Office, you can select C:/MSOCache/ here, these are the installer files for MS Office, which you probably won't be needing any time soon.

- C:/System Volume Information/ (Place where System Restore information is stored(if activated). You probably never use this data, and when you do you won't be worrying about speed, believe me :P On smaller systems i recommend setting this option on for once, creating one restore point, making a .rar file out of this, putting that somewhere safe and deactivating it. This way you can always extract the .rar file into the previously mentioned folder and activate System Restore again)

- C:/Windows/Driver Cache/ (Name says all... Place where possibly needed drivers are stored, but you probably won't need them after you installed your system. (Except for when adding new hardware of course))

- C:/Windows/Installer/ (Installer database, used when you uninstall a program. In my case this is an event that won't happen very often, so it pick these files ;))

- C:/Windows/$NTUninstall.......... all these folders can be safely put into the 'Archive region' since they're uninstallers for Windows Updates and Windows products like WMP 11 and such. If you think you will never need those, most unlikely, you can also delete them(i do NOT recommend this).)

- C:/Windows/$hf_mig$ (Contains Windows Update data as well...)

- Any other files you can think of you will never use...

High Performance:

Wildcards:

- *.exe All .exe files(I have never used this option myself, but UD recommends it. It is quite logic, all executables should be high performance)

- *.dll All .dll files(''Same as above'')

Automatic:

Same story as with Archive and Automatic... I use 5 % here, but that's just because otherwise UD will place some of my selected Archive files within high performance... Leaving gaps in the inner tracks... So not recommend for any of you, just so you know.

Custom:

- C:/Windows/Prefetch/ (This folder contains data that will automatically be loaded into the RAM at boot, programs you use much etc.)

- C:/Windows/system32/ (Do i need to explain this one? No, i'm lazy, just one word: System files :) Did he just say ONE WORD, but he used TWO... Ohhhhh, shame on me)

- C:/Windows/assembly/ (Don't ask me what this contains, but it's important MS shit...)

- C:/Windows/system/ (The same WORD here...)

- C:/Windows/ (Don't select the whole folder, but all the important files in it, like explorer.exe, taskman.exe and such. (These files should probably be within the 5% i put with Automatic, but just to be sure select them here))

- C:/Program Files (Program files... More explanation needed? Go ask your dad or ask the IT people at your school and laugh at them when they don't know...)

- C:/Documents and Settings/'Your username'/ (Select every folder in here except for 'My documents' which will probably contain those movies and large mp3 collections you want out of the way.)

This was quite it... Use this and a lot of your unused data will probably be out of the way ;) Now i need some food! I thought i'd just need 5 minutes for this... NOT! :P

Any additions to my list would be very appreciated!!!

Edit: Using the Excluded Files option: When you have some Archive files you want to have out of the way, but you know they get put with High Performance data every time because you used them much in the past you can first put them with archive an do a consolidate defragmentation with only Respect Archive selected and after that add the files to Excluded Files, this way they will be out of the way forever ;)

Is UD 2008 just a cosmetic improvement or a real performance upgrade?

both m8 :P, both

Marik is right, it's both, but they desperately needed a new interface. The old one was JUNK! :frusty: But it has become faster and better too :)

Nah, nothing like built-in defrag of XP. I think UD is the farthest away from the XP built-in defrag of all defraggers since it has such advanced file placements optimization options :)

I still have a problem even with this latest version. I'm stumped as to what the problem could be causing this. :frusty: Anyone have a clue?

I've had this problem before and i managed to fix it somehow... Would you try this for me: Uninstall UD, delete any file connected to UD(Probably just the folder in Program Files), use CCleaner and TuneUp Utilities to scan for registry errors and delete them all (trust me, it's safe) and then install UD 2008. Don't use/apply any crack/patch/keygen yet. Now before you open it: Disable Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Firewall (you should first close all Internet connections :P). Open it and see if it works now? If it does, try it with AV but without Anti-Spyware and Firewall. If it still works try it with both AV and Firewall but without Anti-Spyware. If it still works enable Anti-Spyware too. Does it still work? If it does delete UDefrag.exe and search TPB for my torrent with the MiNT release(or get it somewhere else) and place the cracked UDefrag.exe in the program folder. Now open it (with AV, AS and Firewall enabled) and see it it works. Hopefully this helps you out.

I tried all of this myself, but none of it helped. I even tried running the cracked exe on its own & it still crashed.

@Shought: THANKS for that long little Guide there.

I have 2 HD's

(80GBs) C: (Primary): This is where i install everything

(300GBs) D: (Secondary): This drive is just pure Storage (Music/Videos/Pictures/Documents/Installer)

Not sure if you need any more info.

PS:

- *.exe All .exe files(I have never used this option myself, but UD recommends it. It is quite logic, all executables should be high performance)

- *.dll All .dll files(''Same as above'')

I type '*.dll All .dll files'? Or just '*.dll'

Also if you use 'Consolidate' as the method, which Options should I tick under it's options?

Ah, i don't have any experience with configuring UD for two drives... I guess it'd be better to use the 300GB drive for installing everything and using the 80GB one for storage and a part of the 300 GB one. In that case you should just use the 'Auto option' for the 80GB one and you should use the things i recommended in my previous post for the 300GB one... This is based on the principle that on the 300GB drive there's a bigger 'Outer region' of the drive in which you can put more high performance data. I assume you can't just take the data of the 80GB one and put it on the 300GB one without reinstalling windows. That's a bummer...

More information that would help me: What do you use the computer for mainly?

For the extensions: Just put '*.dll' and '*.exe' in there (without the ' ').

I don't really game on my system.. Mainly just for Fansubbing.. So dealing with a LOT of .avi/.vob/.mpeg's

And nah don't want to use my 300GB as my Primary (Installing Windows on it), that is what my smaller drive is for.

I think I will probably give a reinstall a try, just waiting on the scene release of sp3 intergrated. As well as an XPLite & XPAntispy updates. I have all updates (bar sp3). The problem happened on previous build aswell, I thought it was a problem with the crack from MiNT & previous build to 1.72 was fine. When I do eventually reinstall I will report back.

EDIT: Looks like the scene release of sp3 is now out, thanks to eth0.

Yeah, i'm planning on doing that, but i was first waiting on some comments or suggestions to add something... Ah well, i'll go ahead and do it some time today. It's a lot of work :P But i guess it'll go a lot faster since i already wrote it now ;) Another problem that many of you probably didn't notice is that this is MY best configuration. This won't work for everyone. Most of my guide is quite useless to Cultivator, for whom i wrote it, because he has 2 HD's and uses thelittle one for installing. But then again, if someone has an alternative configuration then mine i'll probably still be able to put something together... This is gonna take some time, i'm sure of that :P

Hmmm ok, then my suggestions will do fine for you, placing all the movies into the archive region. (At least i guess you don't really 'use' your PC whilst subbing?) What more do you have on your 300 GB drive? Just the things you mentioned or some other things? If i were you i'd pikc the files you use most and put them in the high performance region, or just go with the 'Auto option' again. i don't say 'go with the Auto option' to get rid off you or to finish it of fast, i just think that might be the best choice for you ;)

eth0 is good  I've always use his little activation thingy :P

I wish you good luck, and i must say that i'm almost sure that a new install of XP will solve the problem, if not then the problem is hardware or driver related... \Now i see myself typing, maybe you could try upgrading some drivers?

Edit: One more thing i have to say: @#&*$!!! Your problem is persistent... Normally when some problem is software related and i try anything i can think of i will finally solve it, but i'm empty, all my ideas are used for the moment... Maybe i need to go ride a donkey in Saudi-Arabia and see if that can get me to some inspiration... Who knows.

@Shought: In that case... For all those extensions you had listed for Archives, would I move those to High Performance?

.mp3/.mp4/.avi/ .etc?

EDIT:

Oh on the 300GB,

Is basically where all the things that don't need to be installed are..

Music/Videos/Documents/Pictures/Installers.

I think it's best to just use the 'Auto option' there. Since your computer probably knows better than you which files you access most on that HD  But if you wish to do it manually, i can only say: pick 'the files you use most' and put them into the high performance area. Pick 'the files you never use' and put them into the archive area. And leave the other files alone, so don't place files you sporadically use into the archive area, but just let UD consolidate them to the outer regions. This will in any scenario give you the best performance ;)

(I took the info you gave about the content of the 300GB into account here)

@Shought: Just to be sure, when you mention 'Auto' you mean the Defrag Method or 'Auto' as int he Settings per Drive? =X

And IF Auto-Per-Drive, which setting to use on that.

Again thanks for all the assistance.
