The dilemma - whether to choose a legal computer software and operating system or pirated, should not be there, is the attitude of professionals to new information technologies. Reliability and security are definitely on the side of the original, but because of low standards and developed piracy, most computer users still choose pirated versions.

Why this behavior should be changed in order to choose the software, what to look for when shopping, but what's the difference between the original and the pirates, we asked the representative of company "Microsoft" in Serbia, and the questions of "The Consumer" were answered by Milos Blagojevic development manager at the company, "Microsoft Serbia."

Easiest way to explain why a consumer should opt for a legal program, not the pirated?

First, pirated software is neither reliable nor safe for your computer and I should openly say that the decision to pirate software comes from customers who do not know what to install in your computer. As people would say, it is a pig in a poke. Then, the story that legal software is much more expensive from piracy is also incorrect, as with the pirated there are many hidden costs such as installation of various improvements, anti-virus programs and the like. When all these costs come together, we arrive at the amount, for example, often exceeds the original cost of Windows. And when you buy the original software, you have many advantages, the support of renowned producer of software, the right to free updates, security and stability of the hardware.

What are the advantages of providing legal software?

Legal software is more reliable, safer and easier to use than the pirated versions. It is protected from attack by viruses and there is no need to install additional antivirus programs. Does not break down, you can freely search the internet, and the price is not greater than all the costs that you pay when you are using pirated versions.

So when consumers need to choose software, what should they pay attention when buying, where and how to buy?

Customers are advised, first, to always opt for legal software. Market research found that the main reason customers made a decision on the use of pirated software rather than legal is for the lack of information. Also, the research that we conducted from September to December 2011. using "anonymous shopper" we found that even 42 percent of retail stores for computer and software equipment offered to customers, when purchasing a new computer, to install pirated software, and this is something which is unacceptable. Most of the stores offered the service of this kind of software installed in the shop, for what is necessary to allocate a sum of two to three thousand. - This is dinars, which is around 30 euro.

Is it advisable to always choose the latest version or not and why?

The latest versions of the software make improvements, and thereby address customer needs much more than previous versions. But it all depends on the needs of users. So there are several versions of "Windows Seven" aimed at different user profiles. Basic version meets the needs of home users, while there are versions designed for business users and IT professionals.

What is the rate of piracy in Serbia and how we stand in comparison with the countries of the region and Western Europe?

The rate of piracy in Serbia is very high at 74 percent. This means that only one in four computers is legal, or has a legal operating system. With this rate of piracy we are among the leaders in the region, as a higher rate of piracy have only Albania and Montenegro. There are estimates that if the piracy rate is reduced by 10 percent, the state budget would be 29 million dollars wealthier and richer for between 10,000 and 15,000 new jobs. The annual value of the software market in Serbia is 93 million dollars, while the pirate market, according to the IDC study in 2010., an additional 96 million dollars. Reducing software piracy is not just a legal issue but also the issue of competitiveness of the domestic economy in the regional market. The use of legal software, leading large companies who are aware of the importance of having good and stable IT systems, as well as all the other benefits that make use of genuine software.

The Serbian government last year put the emphasis on the regulation of intellectual property protection is extremely important. In the Tax Office formed a special unit that deals with the control of the legality of software and improvements are already visible. Reducing piracy is crucial for the further development of domestic IT companies by providing additional services and services, bearing in mind that the analysis shows that, for example, for every dollar spent on "Microsoft" software creates eight dollars in additional services for local companies.
