When buying secondhand or "as new" hard drive/pc, one should ensure the hard drive is cleaned and re-formatted before use. Otherwise, one can get buggered and end up with HIV.

HIV = Harmful Invasive Virus

Find me a store in anywhere in the world that will let me open the box, inside their store, so I can setup the system and check. Isn't that like telling a girl to go get an STD test before you would date her? How has that worked out for you? :P

PS: Not trying to be rude, but come on man!!! seriously???

Not trying to be rude, but come on man!!! seriously???

If you have bought a secondhand hard drive or pc, after you have taken it home, will you not re-format the hard drive before storing your data on it?

If you don't then don't be surprised if you have HIV.

You are missing my point. I bought the PC, took it home to setup it up, only to find out that previous owner data was still in there. I took it back to the store only to be told it was a final sale and there is nothing the company could do about it. Of course I formatted the damn thing. Now the point is why the company did not sanitize the data before resale. With so much privacy concerns, potential of previous customers possessing data that may damage my reputation and/or possibly go to jail for data that is not even mine to begin with.

These sleezeball companies should do their due diligence in ensuring product is safe for both previous and new owner. When I say "safe" I am not just talking Malware problems. Would you not agree, All data should be securely wiped and have an OS newly installed before being sold? :)

Yes, I agree that all data should be securely wiped and have an OS newly installed before being sold.

But more than the shop, how careless was the person who sold/returned the machine to the shop with all personal data still on the pc. Don't need to steal his/her ID, he/she was giving it away.

A lesson to be learnt for all of us from this thread, when buying hard drive or PC secondhand, "as new", refurbished or anything other than brand new, buyer beware. Always check terms & conditions, return policy & if any guarantee before parting with money. As a consumer, know your rights & basic national consumer protection laws.

Here in UK, we have a few laws to protect the buyer, even for seconhand goods when bought from a trader in a shop or online.

Better luck next time.

Seasons Greetings & a Happy New Year to all.

and he didnt notice the movies and data beforehand? his anti virus and malware didnt notice anything before hand? this guy is iether a complete idiot that shouldnt have accuse to a computer or is lying

Most guys who work in other industries & using computers for their work/job don't know much about computers. Only IT person & computer interested persons know about this virus, malwares, trojans.......

A normal user (here Darryl Mason ) bought a hard disk for backup purpose. He may have connected it & found some video files.

Its human curiosity to know what inside.

I have seen many movies in the form of wmv, asf containing trojans will just fire up once you opened the video.

In his case this must have happened & since he is not that much geeky or knowledgeable in computers, he may also not be using the BEST antivirus, anti-malware, anti spyware, anti trojan, root kit remover, firewall..... & allowed his system to lost some footage.

Its seller responsibility to sell empty hard disk, if he is selling new ones.

I never heard hard disk manufacturers writing something on hard disk (non empty) & selling it as new one.
