Microsoft Surface can appear on the market by 2011 says corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Specialized Devices and Applications business, Tom Gibbons. Gibbons feels that Surface will be affordable in 2-3 years for consumers.

Quote

“In the three-year time window, we absolutely see how to get there,” Gibbons said. “If we can beat that, we’ll try to beat that.”

Microsoft has gotten 2,000 inquiries from 50 governments or corporations, stretching across 25 industries. Microsoft is focused on shipping units out to customers. Gibbons said. The reason: Because a tabletop interface is so new, customers have needed extra help designing custom software. “While I was hoping we’d have something out now, we’ll definitely have something out in the next couple of months.”

Steve Ballmer said that they will push to get Surface out as soon as possible

Quote

“We’ve had more pushback to get a consumer version of the Surface in-market than you can shake a stick at,” Ballmer said. “We will follow our noses in terms of consumer interest and make a set of investments that try to take some steps toward making Surface a consumer product, and also scaling up the industrial design.”

So, it's an Internet-smart & business touchscreen?

Hope it can survive spilled beer.

I'll hardly be able to breathe until I get one of those. :welcome:

Definitely sounds interesting, and pretty cool.

Would look great as a glass topped coffee table in the lounge...

If the OS running it is anything like vista, i might be tempted to drop the coffee mug from a great height!

Either that or see if i can handle more pints than me!

;)

AT&T first to introduce Microsoft Surface in retail stores

Microsoft Surface is a very interesting technology introduced about a year ago that combines hardware and software to allow users to manipulate digital content directly with their hands onto a multi-touch surface. Until now however, there were no commercial applications of Surface yet, but just a lot promises and intended uses. That's about to change with AT&T's announcement that they will be adding Microsoft Surfaces to select stores in New York City, Atlanta, San Antonio and San Francisco.

According to the press release issued today, the Surface displays will be used to view interactive coverage maps and to compare phone specifications just by placing them on the Surface's table. The benefits may fall short for justifying the $5000+ price tag of a single device, however it's no coincidence that the roll out is beginning on select metropolitan areas, where it's expected to raise consumer's eyebrows. Depending on the success of these units AT&T will decide if it’s worth expanding to other stores.
