New Microsoft Security Essentials beta coming

Microsoft has just sent out invites via Microsoft Connect inviting people to join a new Microsoft Security Essentials beta program. This is possibly for version 3 of the free antivirus program

It looks like Microsoft is getting close to releasing a new version of Microsoft Security Essentials, as some Microsoft Connect participants are being invited to join a new Microsoft Security Essentials Public Beta program. Microsoft vaguely state that the newest MSE beta will have “the latest protection features”, and the beta program itself will “start soon” after you accept the invitation.

Apart from the fact that Microsoft is running a brand new beta program for MSE, we really have absolutely no other details. This is possibly for Microsoft Security Essentials version 3, as previously in June of last year Microsoft ran a beta program before releasing version 2 of the free antivirus software.

I would like to see they improve faster scanning and detections :) They performed poorly in AV Test :(

The scan time is definitely slower than most, but to me that is the least important defect an AV can have.

I've found it to be by far, however, lightest on system performance. Especially on less powerful machines that cannot handle big bloated security programs.

Essentials is good yes, free and less troubles but consumes upto 150mb ram and first virus database is like 90mb+ takes forever to get protection working at start.

Next protection for slow systems is Eset version 4 not bloated annoying 5. vers.4 uses 35-60mb ram only.

Something what I don't like is that if you have realtime scan enabled then why you need to have once a week scans enabled that on slow systems takes forever.

I think Kaspersky had feature that it wouldn't rescan safe and unmodified items.

Microsoft Security Essentials beta detailed, available by end of year

Microsoft detailed the new features of its upcoming Security Essentials beta on Friday.

The software giant has started accepting nominations for a beta version of Microsoft Security Essentials. The company plans to include the following enhancements with the update:

• Enhanced protection through automatic malware remediation - The Beta will clean high-impact malware infections automatically, with no required user interaction.
  
• Enhanced performance - The Beta includes many performance improvements to make sure your PC performance isn’t negatively impacted.
  
• Simplified UI - Simplified UI makes Microsoft Security Essentials Beta easier to use.
  
• New and improved protection engine - The updated engine offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities.
  

“The number of users than can participate in the Beta is limited,” explained a Microsoft spokesperson in a blog post on Friday. “We anticipate the Microsoft Security Essentials beta to be available to the general public by the end of the year.” Microsoft started inviting previous beta testers to join the beta earlier on Friday.

The company released version 2 of the software in December last year. Microsoft introduced Security Essentials, its free anti-virus software, in September 2009. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is designed to work on Windows XP, Vista and 7 and protects end users against virus threats and spy ware. MSE is Microsoft’s free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that replaced Microsoft’s paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which was withdrawn in 2009.
