Raddled rocker Iggy Pop is revealed as the new face of Paco Rabanne

In what must be one of the world's strangest collaborations, Paco Rabanne have announced that face of their new fragrance will be none other than the infamous punk rock star Iggy Pop.

The fact that the veiny, straggly-haired star looks like he needs a good hose-down seems to have been no deterrant for the brand, who have signed the raddled rocker up as the face of scent Black XS L’Excès, to be launched next year.

Last seen advertising insurance for Swiftcover (whose ads were incidentally banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after it was discovered Swiftcover did not insure musicians), it seems the the unsavoury singer is keen to embrace the more fragrant end of the market.

Paco Rabanne's Black XS L’Excès, which will have both a men's and a women's version, will debut in France in January next year, accompanied by a billboard and television campaign with Pop as the star.

The name of the fragrance - French for excess - suits the American-born singer, who was once one of the music industry's most anarchic figures.

Pop was the first performer to do a stage-dive, which he started at a concert in Detroit (he would go on to injure himself severely with later dives), while his other antics include grabbing female members of the audience, rolling around in broken glass, exposing himself to the crowd and vomiting on stage.

Renowned music video director Jonas Akerlund - he of the recent Girl Panic! Duran Duran music video starring 90s supermodels - will be directing the TV commercials, which will screen in the new year.

Details of a global release are yet to be confirmed, but the fragrance is likely to be available in the UK and U.S. at some point in 2012.
