ZoneAlarm's firewall had reached its peak, Zone Labs has found a way to make it even better, increasing its power against spyware and leak-test malware techniques. Its program control is more flexible than ever, with different levels of trust and the ability to kill the worst programs instantly. The combination of kernel-level firewall techniques and signature-based spyware recognition already offers unusually powerful spyware blocking and decent removal. Overall, the next version of ZoneAlarm looks to be a superb security suite.

Thanks to spudboy for the update.

ZA Free 10.1.056.000

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Smart Defense = Off

Application Control = High

Trusted Zone = High

Internet Zone = High

Microsoft Catalog Utilization = Off

ZA is not asking for inbound/outbound access upon first use of any applications regardless of the above settings. Instead, it is automatically placing green checks by itself with no prompts. I have tried installing over the previous version, tried a completely clean install, tried using the option to reset to default settings, but it always ends up the same. It's as if the Smart Defense setting is stuck in auto mode or that the Application Control is stuck to the off position. Or both.

Looks like I'm going back to the previous free version. :(

ZA has not been asking for inbound/outbound access since the first version 10.

I have tried for 2 weeks to force it to accept my personal settings (limiting outbound access), but each time it got an update, it overwrote it by, like you mentioned, green flags.

There is something deeply flawed in the behaviour of ZA 10. In the ZA forums they sell this as a new novelty feature.

Apparantly this originates from the idea to start using the Microsoft Catalog to determine the risk factor of an installed application. But like you also discovered, disabling the utilization doesn't change a thing.

In the end, since it kept overwriting the settings I set manually, and after 5 years of being a satisfied user, I threw it off my PC and replaced it with Comodo, which is free, and does exactly what I say it should do.
