Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. And even though the calls are free, they are really excellent quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls. You can even call landlines and mobile phones at really cheap per minute rates (and there's no setup or subscription fee).

Thanks to anuraag for the update.

Officially afaik 5.5.0.119 released. This version (5.6.0.105) i would describe as a tryout release.

you can get 5.5.0.119 from www.skype.com/go/getskype-full

No, 5.6 is not a beta release, though that would have been their normal pattern. Instead, they inexplicably released a 5.5 maintenance release and 5.6 on the next day. This served to instantly orphan the 5.5 release, so I'm not sure why they bothered with it. My only thought is that they expected some Home screen-style pushback against the in-call advertising in 5.6 for non-paying customers and wanted a fixed 5.5 for fallback.

Thanks, reseiler, many other sites, eg. FileHippo, etc have listed v5.5.0.119 as Skype's latest release.

Which is the latest release, v5.5 or v5.6 ? :s

Technically the 5.6 of this thread, since it was released some hours later than 5.5.0.119.

Not so by the reputable FileHippo website which shows v5.5.0.119 as the latest release.

Not that a 3rd-party site is a higher authority than the vendor's own site(!), but FileHippo probably shows the old version since as of this writing Skype hasn't switched over the main download page to the new version yet. However, it was announced and released last week:

What a mess ! Just realized that Portable Apps has listed v5.5.59.119 as the latest release which is after v5.5.0.119 and before v5.6.0.105. :frusty:

You can ignore that middle number -- Skype always does that to indicate the installer the product was installed from. They're exactly the same version of Skype, but one installer may come with an optional bundle of, say, Chrome, and the other Google Toolbar, or some other combination (or no bundle at all).
