Enable 2-way Windows Vista Firewall With Advanced Security

Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall that has outbound filtering disabled by default. Why? Because it is complicated for end-users to use so they had that feature turned off as well as hidden. In fact, it is hidden so well that many users may think that the two-way firewall was yet another feature that was pulled from the final product. While that is true for other features the two-way firewall made it into the final product, you just need to know how to find it.

To get started, just click on the Start Button and key in wf.msc and hit Enter. This will bring up the comprehensive Windows Firewall with Advanced Security management interface. Here you will be able to configure rules for incoming as well as outgoing connections.

Make sure that you set the default action for outbound connections from allow to block. Otherwise the outbound firewall will be useless because it will allow all connections. This can be done from the Windows Firewall Properties link found on the main screen of the management interface.

the Vista Firewall is a "good" firewall, for Noobs, but, for me, when i try Vista 2 months, it was a pain...

the firewall work like it should for incoming connection, but allow all outgoing connection by default...like the article said.

it's really not the best setup, for a firewall...

so...for some cracked software, that need NOT to connect to internet, i had to make individual rule, in the advanced setting, manually, to block them...and, the way to do it ISN'T user friendly, at all!

it's probably the worst interface(and very well hidden) to do it i have ever see (trying every firewall).

the comodo firewall(i use it now on XP), was in beta, not ready for Vista, at that time.

since that time, the only thing i miss from Vista (dual boot setup)...is the Aero look(the ones on XP to simulate are not stable and slow the system more), and, mostly, the way you can put (after searching where they are) some quick access to folder, on the left panel of the explorer window.

einstürzende

If you wanna find it (shortcut) by standard way (through explorer) go:

Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

Very easy to find, standard location and what else to say...

Only, very leaky FW (but miles ahead of XP built in)..., use 3rd party solution
