Massive File Organization

It is safe to say that I have a lot of files. A few hundred gigs of applications, 25+ gig library, and a 25 gig music collection of just and only my most favorite songs.

These are the applications I use to sort, organize, delete duplicates, and name all of those files. The best part is that all but a few are free.

UltraExplorer :) (Free)

Very customizable. Has tabs and two different windows, breadcrumb bar, and its common tasks bar seriously speed up the process of sorting data into folders. Best of all it is actually faster than the native explorer.exe we are all familiar with.

Renamer :) (Free)

This is one of the biggest time savers I have ever run across. I prefer my file names to be standardized. Renamer allows me to drop in a bunch of files and then it basically allows anyone to create a batch process to edit the file names without having to know anything about programing. I usually spend 3 min creating a series of naming "rules" then let Renamer do its stuff.

DoubleKiller :) (Free)

DoubleKiller ensures that I do not have duplicates of files based on a variety of criteria. If you have a large music collection and you are running out of space this can be a life saver. I helped out a buddy of mine he had almost 120gb of music and we got rid of 22 gigs worth of duplicate songs.

DtSearch :( (Not Free)

http://www.dtsearch.com/

In the military I need to be able to look up information in my field manuals, regulations, and technical manuals quickly. In the field I don't have Internet. So I have a copy of all (several thousand books) on my harddrive and DtSearch allows me to search for text similar to the way I would with Google. It is also especially helpful when I am making a meal at home but I need a recipe. I just type in my favorite meal or even an ingredient and it looks through my cookbook collection for recipes.

Adobe Acrobat 8 :( (Not Free)

You can use Adobe Reader to view PDF's but what about all those PDF's that have unrecognized text (non-OCR). Adobe has an amazing text recognition feature that allows me to convert new PDFs so the text is recognized by DtSearch. You can also preform batch OCR's so you don't have to process each new PDF one at a time.

PDF Password Remover :( (Not Free)

Just in case I run into a PDF that will not OCR because it is password protected, I run it though PDF Password Remover. Bam! The PDF is mine.

Who else has some good software shares? Maybe even some free alternatives to the non-free apps I have listed?

I've been looking for file organizer applications for a long time, you just did the trick! Thanks!

Some nice listings here... I may start a new thread on some of my own favorite applications (no just file organisers) and ask others to do the same. I'm sure we all have some applications on our system that are unknown to many others which would benefit from them.

I'll do this now...
