Mobius Digital's indie hit Outer Wilds, not to be confused with Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, is getting an expansion. The original game sent players into a time loop set in a universe endlessly repeating a cataclysmic event, and somehow, the story is being made even more intricate with the Echoes of the Eye expansion.
The announcement trailer arrived during publisher Annapurna Interactive's first dedicated games showcase. Not much is known about this mysterious expansion other than what Annapurna is sharing in the trailer description, which says:
A strange satellite photo that can’t be explained. A new museum exhibit that marks the trailhead for one last journey into the wilds. Should you pull at the thread and unravel the solar system’s deepest secret, or is some knowledge better left in the dark?
Mobius Digital creative director Alex Beachum also shared a cryptic message before the trailer rolled, saying inquiries by those who've experienced the original story firsthand like why the expansion is being made and how will it fit into the overall narrative are "very good questions." More details will be shared later as the launch gets closer.
Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye will be releasing on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on September 28. It was also confirmed this will be the first and only expansion that will reach Outer Wilds. Meanwhile, the base game is coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime this holiday season.
