Yesterday, OpenAI introduced a new ChatGPT Images experience powered by its latest GPT-Image-1.5 image generation model. The new model is significantly better at preserving key elements, such as lighting, composition, and subject likeness, between input and output images. Alongside the improved model, the Images experience will also get a redesigned home page featuring trending prompts and preset filters.

Now, Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, has revealed several new features that are coming soon to ChatGPT. While ChatGPT is widely used for long, meaningful conversations, users still turn to Google Search for many simple, everyday queries. These upcoming features are designed to address those use cases, targeting users who rely on Google Search for quick information such as local businesses, sports updates, and more.

Currently, when users research products or restaurants on ChatGPT, they typically receive a long, text-based response. While these answers are often more informative than a standard Google Search result, visual context can make the information even more useful. To address this, ChatGPT will now display relevant images alongside responses, with clear source attribution.

Going forward, ChatGPT will also visually highlight important people, places, and products within answers. Users will be able to tap on these elements to access more information without needing to ask a follow-up question. In addition, users can highlight any word or phrase in a response to instantly explore it further, allowing them to go deeper without losing context within the conversation thread.

Many people rely on Google Search for quick tasks such as unit conversions, currency exchange, and time zone calculations. ChatGPT is now introducing similar visual utilities for these use cases, enabling users to easily adjust conversion values. Another common use case is checking live sports scores. Instead of returning plain text, ChatGPT will present scores through a new visual experience.

OpenAI is rolling out a growing set of these utilities in ChatGPT and plans to expand them further in the coming months.

OpenAI is also working on enhancing the writing experience within ChatGPT. With these improvements, users will be able to edit text inline or switch to a full-screen editor depending on their needs. When drafting longer content such as reports, ChatGPT will offer options to download the document as a PDF or Word file. For emails and messages, users will be able to open drafts directly in their email or messaging apps from within ChatGPT.

In October, OpenAI announced a new generation of apps that users can interact with directly inside the ChatGPT experience. Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow were among the first partners. OpenAI has now revealed that several additional apps, including Adobe, Airtable, Clay, Lovable, OpenTable, Replit, and Salesforce, will be coming soon to ChatGPT.

Have to confess, AI chatbots is the one AI thing that I've adopted.

Infinitely better than the almost-useless search engines that never find or seemingly never-try-to-find anything relevant to my search words. But ask a chatbot a question, it gives me the answer.

The big downside is that increased use of AI chatbots means fewer visitors to sites, and sites ultimately become nothing more than information providers to chatbots.
