Super-fast 480Hz monitors could soon be a reality

Back in 2017, Blur Busters carried out tests on an engineering sample of the first 4K 120Hz panel that could also push 480Hz in a low-resolution 540p mode. The unit was from ZisWorks and these were available at the time in the form of a 28" TN panel (model x28) or a 39" VA one (model x39).

And while these were generally for DIYers and testers, 480Hz panels could soon become a reality for consumers too as per a report from TFTCentral. According to the report, LG Display as well as AU Optronics (AUO) are allegedly working on such ultra-fast refresh rate panels. They will apparently be ready for production towards the end of 2022 and hence we could see them release these to a wider audience in 2023.

Although we are speculating here, such 480Hz displays might be shown off at the CES 2023 similar to how ASUS and Nvidia demonstrated the world's first 360Hz panel in the form of the ROG SWIFT 360Hz PG259QN back in CES 2020.

In terms of features, not too many details are known but the report does allege that the LG panel will feature a 24.5-inch 1080p display with support for DisplayHDR 400 and decent color reproduction. Over on AUO's side, the details are even more scarce for its 480Hz panel other than a hint that the display could be a 1080p screen. However, SweClockers adds that the firm is reportedly also working on a 1440p 360Hz panel for a 2021 release.

In its test of the ZisWorks panels in 480Hz mode, Blur Busters noted the following improvements:

    • Reduced Phantom Array Effect (commonly called ghosting)
    • Reduced Input Lag
    • Improved Persistence of Vision (Sparkler's trail effect)
    • Reduced Motion Blur

TFTCentral has also said in its report that LG is purportedly developing a new technology called "IPS Black" that will be able to produce richer blacks on IPS LCDs and reduce the amount of IPS glow exhibited. Apparently, a couple of 4K displays - one 27-inch and the other 31.5-inch - are planned for release in January next year.
