Star Citizen players will need to work together to tackle the new Tactical Strike mission involving the Vanduul alien faction.

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has pushed out another alpha update to its in-development sci-fi experience. Instead of major features, the Star Citizen Alpha 4.8 update is largely focused on its brand-new rescue mission, which will require a large squadron of ships and ground forces to coordinate to pull off.

The mission to rescue a People's Alliance pilot will get players involved with a large-scale opposing force from the Vanduul alien faction. This means entire squadrons of fighters, bombers, dropships, and more will need to come together to accomplish this multi-phase mission. Here are the steps that players will need to go through to get out safely with the prisoner:

    Approach and Defend Tranquility

    • Rally the strike force and escort the People's Alliance Idris Tranquility into position. The Idris will serve as your mobile rearm, repair, and refuel platform throughout the engagement. Establish perimeter defense before pushing on the station.

    Destroy the Power Relays

    • Target the station's external Power Relays with ballistic weapons — energy weapons are ineffective against hardened station targets. Destroying all relays opens access to the superstructure trench runs.

    Destroy Cooling Units

    • Cooling Units are vulnerable to energy weapons. Smaller ships must navigate the internal superstructure trenches to reach them, accumulating Distortion Damage the longer they remain inside.

Destroy the Core and Defend Tranquility

    • Breach the core chamber once the shutters open. Distortion and radiation intensity increases dramatically inside. Simultaneously, hostile forces will escalate attacks on Tranquility so exterior ships must maintain its defense.

    Infiltrate and Override

    • With the core destroyed the station's interior FPS section becomes accessible. A ground team boards and fights through the station to reach the override terminal.

    Escort Gabe to Safety

    • Extract hostage pilot Gabe Windell from Shattered Blade custody and get him safely off the station to complete the contract.

Other than the new rescue mission, Cloud Imperium has also brought in refueling missions that have players servicing NPC and player ships in the universe that require support. This involves docking with another craft via the fuel nozzle, then letting the transfer happen according to whatever payment both parties have agreed to.

The developer rolled out a new ship to Star Citizen with this update too, with the Drake Ironclad and the Assault variant now available for purchase. These are described as platform ships that cannot be piloted on their own and need the Drake Command Module to be docked to take over flight controls.

More changes of this update include dynamic G-Force tolerance calculations depending on what players are wearing, new on-foot weapons, hairstyles, VR improvements, and more. Find the complete changelog here.

The Star Citizen Alpha 4.7: Welcome to the Rock update is now available for all backers in the Live channel. The project's crowdfunding tracker is inching closer and closer to the one billion dollars raised mark as well, with less than $30 million to go at the time of writing this.

Star Citizen will also have a free-to-play promotion starting tomorrow, May 15. Dubbed DefenseCon, this event is slated to run until May 27, offering everyone access to over 100 ships and the full multiplayer side of the game.
