Obsidian Entertainment is going back and updating the first The Outer Worlds sci-fi RPG, with all platforms getting the benefits and upgrades
Obsidian Entertainment only recently released The Outer Worlds 2, and the studio is now working on updates and expansions to that RPG. At the same time, it is now going back to shipping updates to the original game that started the series. Earlier today, the Microsoft-owned studio announced that new updates carrying bug fixes, enhancements, and features are incoming to the 2019-released The Outer Worlds, alongside a free upgrade.
While it's working on new updates, Obsidian will be upgrading base game owners of The Outer Worlds to the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free. This is the 2023-released remaster developed by Virtuos under Take-Two that also includes both Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos expansion packs. The shift is slated to happen on May 27 on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG platforms.
While the original version will remain in player libraries, this does mean that its store pages will be taken down across all platforms. As for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions, anyone who owns the base game and DLCs will automatically be upgraded to the Spacer’s Choice Edition.
The Spacer's Choice remaster wasn't received very well originally due to performance issues and bugs, and it seems Obsidian is now stepping in to enhance the experience. The first update of this new development is already rolling out now, which has a range of bug fixes and performance improvements. Find the changelog over here.
The studio is also preparing a second, much larger, update to The Outer Worlds. This will include "performance fixes, lighting changes, a host of other quest and gameplay fixes," per Obsidian. It will also carry grenades as a brand-new feature to the RPG as well. A release date has not been announced yet.
This is not the first time that Obsidian Entertainment has gone back to an older game to provide updates. It recently shipped a whole new turn-based combat system to the first Pillars of Eternity game over a decade after its launch.
