Mozilla announced today that it is renaming Firefox accounts to Mozilla accounts. One of the main purposes of a Firefox account is the synchronization of data between different Firefox installations on the same or different devices.

Mozilla explains that it made sense to use the term Firefox accounts in the beginning, as the main focus lay on the Firefox web browser and its functionality. The organization created or acquired several services and products since then, including Pocket, Fakespot, Firefox Monitor or Mozilla VPN.

Not all of these products fly under the Firefox brand. The new name, Mozilla accounts, reflects the wide range of products and services better. Its intention is to "create a more consistent brand experience across all Mozilla surfaces, driving higher awareness of the portfolio of Mozilla products", according to Mozilla.

Firefox account users do not have to do anything. The transition to Mozilla accounts is automated and affects the name and branding only. Users continue to sign-in with their email address and password like before, and all account data and subscriptions are retained in the process and thereafter.

Mozilla explains further that users who signed-in using Google or Apple credentials may continue to do so after the change has been made.

Firefox users will still interact with the URL accounts.firefox.com, as it "ensures a smooth and familiar customer experience". Emails will also continue to come from [email protected] and not from another address. This too "ensures consistency" and helps "identify official correspondence".

In short: Firefox accounts will undergo a branding change to Mozilla accounts. The change affects the brand and its visibility only, and not user credentials, interactions with sites or email addresses, or user data.

Mozilla plans to launch the rebranding on November 1, 2023.

    Closing Words

The renaming of Firefox accounts to Mozilla accounts is just a branding change. Nothing changes for users, as all endpoints and points of communication remain exactly as they were before.

    So Wonderful!

So nice if they do so, I also decided to posthumously rename my dead cat Kodu Tiger. This is much better! Isn't it?
How to name something, it's so important.

But it would be even better if they could make at least one working browser before their official end.
It would be one wonderful party in 21th century.
