Microsoft updates 12-inch Surface Pro with better Surface Pen connection and more

If you have a 12-inch Surface Pro, Microsoft has a firmware update for you. The January 2026 firmware update for the cheapest Surface Pro is now available with security improvements, better connection with the Surface Pen, and simplified device management for IT admins.

Here is what is new in the update:

• Security:
  • Strengthen your device’s security. We’ve addressed potential security vulnerabilities that may lead to unexpected shutdowns and privilege escalation.
• Reliability:
  • Write, erase, and navigate smoothly with your pen. We’ve fixed issues where the Surface Slim Pen 2 unexpectedly loses pairing after inking, pen erasing isn’t stable, and the cursor position isn’t aligned to the pen during hovering.
• Performance and usability:
  • Simplify device management. System administrators now have the option to turn off the stop error triggered by a long power-button hold. They can set the value for PowerButtonBugcheck to 0 in the registry.
