Almost nine years of updates later, Bungie is stopping content updates for its live service shooter Destiny 2.

Since the launch of Destiny 2 in 2017, developer Bungie has been delivering content updates to the shooter through two console generations. Almost nine years of updates later, the Sony-owned studio today announced that Destiny 2 updates are coming to a close.

The studio announced today that on June 9, 2026, it will deliver the final live-service content update to Destiny 2. This is slated to be a "collection of love letters" to fans of the series, bringing a plethora of player-requested additions and story changes to tie up any loose ends.

"For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege," explained the studio. "While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2."

Prior to Destiny, Bungie was the developer behind the Halo franchise for Microsoft. Following its split with Microsoft, and then Activision, Bungie was acquired by Sony in 2022 for a cool $3.6 billion, slated to lead the company's PlayStation live service ventures. However, things haven't gone too well for the studio since then, with it going through multiple layoff waves and even a CEO change.

Sony has also admitted that the purchase hasn't been a successful one for the company. Recently, the PlayStation maker recorded a $765 million impairment charge against Bungie due to the underperformance of Destiny 2 and the underwhelming launch of Marathon, its latest take on the extraction shooter genre.

"Destiny 2 has been our home for many, many years. The unknown can sometimes feel wild, even a bit scary at times, but these opportunities to explore the future are invigorating. As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: to make games we, and you, are excited to play," said Bungie in its blog post today. "From all of us here at Bungie, we cannot thank you enough for joining us on this journey throughout the Sol system. You'll still find us starside for years to come."

Looking towards the future, Bungie said that both Destiny and Destiny 2 will remain playable going forward. However, the development team will now be trying to find out what its next project will be.
