AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which comes with the new 3D V-cache (short for 3D-stacked vertical cache), is still around a couple of weeks away from launch. However, an early sample was obtained by Twitter user XanxoGaming and the chip is already being put through its paces.
CapFrameX is also working with XanxoGaming in this performance evaluation and according to a short update posted by the former, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D seems to easily beat the new Intel flagship Core i9-12900KS in a particularly demanding scene from Shadow of the Tomb Raider (SotTR).
The upcoming 5800X3D seems to be averaging around 228 fps in this scene while CapFrameX says the 12900KS manages around 200fps, which implies a 14% performance advantage in favor of AMD.
Back in January at CES, AMD said that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is going to be 15% faster on average at gaming than the existing Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000 processors. The performance charts shown off by AMD at that time also happens to have Shadow of the Tomb Raider and interestingly, as you can clearly see in the image below, the company declared a 9% gain over a Ryzen 9 5900X.
However, today's CapFrameX SotTR data paints the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in ever better light as it is seemingly 14% faster than an Intel chip which is already faster at gaming than the 5900X. And it is noteworthy here that the 5800X3D is priced at a much lower $449 compared to the $739 price tag on the Core i9-12900KS.
It must be noted here that the reviewer of the 5800X3D is using the yet-to-be-released chipset driver version 4.03.03.624, which is said to bring optimizations for the 3D V-cache. So it is possible that this chipset is really helping the 5800X3D stretch its legs against the i9-12900KS.
